Baptism has been called a sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ.

In the Gospel narratives that describe the life of Jesus, the first instance of him being called the Son of God appears during his Baptism by John the Baptist.

Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus ' tenderness toward children which caused him to say: ' Let the children come to me, do not hinder them ,' allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism.

Baptism is a sacrament because it is an " instrument " instituted by Jesus Christ to impart grace to its recipients.

On two separate occasions the declarations are by God the Father, when during the Baptism of Jesus and then during the Transfiguration as a voice from Heaven.

The biblical narrative of Pentecost, where the 12 Disciples of Christ ( Acts 1: 13, 26 ) along with about 108 other individuals ( Acts 1: 15 ), including many women, among whom was Mary the mother of Jesus ( Acts 1: 14 ) received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room, is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts.

There was an early legend associated with St. Remigius known as the Legend of the Baptism of Moribund Pagan, according to which a dying pagan asked for baptism at the hands of St. Remigius, but when it was found that there was no Oil of the Catechumens or sacred Chrism available for the proper administration of the baptismal ceremony, St. Remigius ordered two empty vials be placed on an altar and as he prayed before them the two vials miraculously filled respectively with the necessary Oil of the Catechumens and Chrism.

I confess one Baptism for the remission of sins and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the coming age, Amen.

In the East, Chrismation is performed by the priest ( using oil specially consecrated by a bishop ) immediately after Baptism, and Unction is normally performed by several priests ( ideally seven ), but may be performed by one if necessary.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: " Since Baptism signifies liberation from sin and from its instigator the devil, one or more exorcisms are pronounced over the candidate ".

In the Latter Day Saint movement, the " Baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost " refers to the experience of one who undergoes the ordinance of confirmation with the laying on of hands to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
