Baptism ( from the Greek noun Βάπτισμα baptisma ; itself derived from baptismos, washing ) is a Christian rite of admission ( or adoption ), almost invariably with the use of water, into the Christian Church generally and also a particular church tradition.

The word " extreme " ( final ) indicated either that it was the last of the sacramental unctions ( after the anointings at Baptism, Confirmation and, if received, Holy Orders ) or because at that time it was normally administered only when a patient was in extremis.

* Baptism with the Holy Spirit
The biblical narrative of Pentecost, where the 12 Disciples of Christ ( Acts 1: 13, 26 ) along with about 108 other individuals ( Acts 1: 15 ), including many women, among whom was Mary the mother of Jesus ( Acts 1: 14 ) received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room, is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts.
* The Baptism of the Holy Ghost is the enduement of power from on high upon the clean, sanctified life, and is evidenced by speaking in tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience distinct from and subsequent to conversion and sanctification that empowers and equips the believer to live a life of holiness.

According to the UPCI, repentance requires the repentant sinner to take the next biblical steps toward forgiveness and reconciliation to God: water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It does not bring by itself the full power of salvation, and unless it is followed up with baptism in water in the name of Jesus Christ and baptism of the Holy Ghost, it may be lost. While the former is considered indispensable evidence of one's baptism by the Holy Ghost ( as spoken of in Isaiah 28: 11, John 3: 5 ; also Matthew 3: 11, Acts 1: 5, 2: 4, 10: 45 – 46 and 19: 6, according to UPCI doctrine ), the latter gift is not necessarily held by all believers once they have initially spoken in tongues.
