Luthor is assisted by the extreme unpopularity of the previous administration's mishandling of the Gotham City earthquake crisis ( as depicted in the No Man's Land storyline in the Batman titles ), and his own seemingly heroic efforts to rebuild Gotham.

Ironically, Batman ultimately learns that the entire debacle was the fault of Luthor alone as he attempted to take control of Gotham by forging deeds for the land in his name, which results in Bruce Wayne severing all commercial ties between the U. S. government and his company, Wayne Enterprises, in protest of Luthor's election as President.

* Gotham City ( the home of Batman ) and Metropolis ( the home of Superman ) have sometimes been presented as twin cities, mainly in 1970s and 1980s stories by DC Comics.

In the first issue of the new Justice League title ( the first released comic of the New 52 initiative and " opening shot " of the new DC Universe ), Batman is pursued by the Gotham City Police Department while on the trail of an alien, revealed to be an agent of Darkseid.

* The 1966 pilot episode of Batman, " Hi Diddle Riddle ", opens with a daring robbery at the Gotham City World's Fair, using stock footage from the 1964 New York World's Fair.

* The fair was the inspiration and design for the Gotham City's World Fair in the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Upon trying to escape from the Gotham City Police and encountering Batman, played by Michael Keaton, in the chemical plant, Napier shoots Batman who deflects the bullet with his own bullet-proof leather glove.

Will Brooker argues in Batman Unmasked: Analyzing a Cultural Icon, that a queer reading of Batman is a valid interpretation, and that homosexual readers would naturally find themselves drawn to the lifestyle depicted within, whether the character of Bruce Wayne himself is explicitly homosexual or not.

* The scene where Bruce being a child falls into the cave and see a bat as his inspiration and his fear ( also used in Batman Begins ), something not mentioned in the prequels of Tim Burton.

* Christian Bale's ' street attire ' in Batman Begins mimics the clothes in the first issue of Batman: Year One when Bruce is walking down the Lower East End.
