* 1968 – Vietnam War: North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces attack Australian troops defending Fire Support Base Coral, east of Lai Khe in South Vietnam on the night of 12 / 13 May, resulting in heavy casualties on both sides and beginning the Battle of Coral-Balmoral.

1 ATF was subsequently deployed astride infiltration routes leading to Saigon in order to interdict communist movement against the capital as part of Operation Coburg during the 1968 Tet Offensive and later during the Battle of Coral-Balmoral in May and June 1968.

William Rufus Shafter ( October 16, 1835 – November 12, 1906 ) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War who received America's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks.
