Belconnen is a district of Canberra, the capital city of Australia, comprising 25 suburbs with 35, 608 dwellings housing 92, 444 people of the 356, 568 people in the Australian Capital Territory.

Belconnen consists of 25 suburbs, the majority of which are predominantly characterised by detached single family homes on suburban blocks.

In the suburbs of Bruce, Emu Ridge and within the Belconnen Town Centre, the bulk of housing is medium density.

Belconnen is well served by a network of near-freeway-quality roads located between suburbs and intersecting the district.

To the south of the district is William Hovell Drive which connects the southern and western suburbs of Belconnen with Parkes Way and the Tuggeranong Parkway which lead to the city centre and Canberra ’ s southern districts respectively.

Services from the various suburbs generally pass through a bus interchange at Belconnen Town Centre from where they continue to Civic and the other town centres to Canberra ’ s south.

It encompasses the northern suburbs of Canberra, including the districts of Belconnen, Gungahlin, North Canberra and also Jervis Bay Territory.

The lake was constructed in 1974 to collect stormwater discharge from a 98. 8km² catchment that includes the surrounding suburbs of Aranda, Macquarie, Cook, Bruce, Belconnen, McKellar, Giralang, Kaleen in the eastern areas of Belconnen and Gungahlin.

It sits on the western edge of the Canberra suburbs, and overlooks bare land towards Mount Stromlo to the west and Belconnen to the north.

The walking trails in the reserve are popular with the local residents and provide scenic views of the inner northern suburbs of Canberra to the east and south and Belconnen and the Brindabella Ranges to the west.

These streets also intersect with Mouat Street, a major route to suburbs in northern Belconnen.

It lies between the suburbs of McKellar, Belconnen, Florey, Melba and Spence.

It lies next to the suburbs of McKellar, Giralang, Kaleen, Bruce and Belconnen.

It lies next to the suburbs of Dunlop, Latham and Holt on the western side of Belconnen, with Florey Drive the boundary to the east, Ginninderra Drive on the north, and Southern Cross Drive on the south.

Belconnen houses a recycling industry, involving organic as well as plastic and metals collection which takes place at the Parkwood Recycling Estate on the outermost western boundary, and at the ACT government facility in Mitchell.

The ACT Government plans to construct a busway to connect the Belconnen Town centre with the hospital and CIT precinct in Bruce and the city centre.

The club returned to the ACT Premier League, now renamed as Belconnen United Football Club, finishing second in the 2006 competition.

The Australian Capital Territory Government operates 23 Preschools, 19 Primary Schools, 5 High Schools and 3 Colleges ( Senior Secondary Schools ) within the District of Belconnen.

Most contain at least one major Federal Government department, such as the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and Australian Bureau of Statistics in Belconnen Town Centre, Department of Health and Ageing in Woden Town Centre and Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs in Tuggeranong Town Centre.

In 1967 the then National Capital Development Commission adopted the " Y Plan " which laid out future urban development in Canberra around a series of central shopping and commercial area known as the ' town centres ' linked by freeways, the layout of which roughly resembled the shape of the letter Y, with Tuggeranong at the base of the Y and Belconnen and Gungahlin located at the ends of the arms of the Y.

Suburbs in Canberra Central ( often referred to as North Canberra and South Canberra ) were further developed in the 1950s, and urban development in the districts of Woden Valley and Belconnen commenced in the mid and late 1960s respectively.

Another Kingsford Smith Drive, which is located in the Canberra district of Belconnen, intersects with Southern Cross Drive.

Michael Gwyl Bevan ( born 8 May 1970, Belconnen, Australian Capital Territory ) is a former Australian left-handed cricket batsman and a slow left arm chinaman bowler.

The road William Hovell Drive which connects the districts of Belconnen to North Canberra in Canberra, Australia is named after him.

The campus is within walking distance of the Westfield shopping and entertainment complex of Belconnen, and just 12 minutes by regular bus service or car from Canberra ’ s Civic Centre.

Woden was established in 1964, Belconnen in 1967 and Tuggeranong in 1973.

Belconnen is situated to the north-west of Canberra's city centre, and surrounds an artificially created, ornamental lake, Lake Ginninderra.

There is almost no ' heavy ' industry in Belconnen, however there is some light industry and manufacturing, including automotive repair, plumbing, electrical, building, and similar services as well as small arts and crafts manufacturing and sales outlets.

The Westfield Belconnen shopping centre, and the surrounding Belconnen Town Centre are locations for a great deal of local commerce with large and smaller department stores, clothes retailers, car dealerships, homeware, supermarkets, and specialist grocery outlets.

There are numerous restaurants and a variety of licenced premises within the Belconnen Town Centre, many close to the shores of Lake Ginninderra.

The Belconnen Markets are a fresh food market area within this commercial district operating from Tuesday to Sunday during business hours.

The Calvary Hospital is a Public Hospital which sits within the suburb of Bruce, on the eastern side of Belconnen, it is one of Canberras two public hospitals, and, being such, is a major item of public infrastructure.

The District of Belconnen was planned in the 1960s and was guided by a philosophy of reliance on private personal transport and an abundance of roads.

The main roads connecting the district with North Canberra and the city centre are Belconnen Way and Ginninderra Drive.

Belconnen is situated south of the Barton Highway which leads to Yass, where it connects with the Hume Highway to Sydney and Melbourne.
