At 321 square miles ( 831 km² ), Benzie County is the smallest of the 83 counties in Michigan.

Benzie County, Michigan's smallest in terms of land area, is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula, in the " little finger " position of the mitten-shaped peninsula and is considered to be part of the Northern Michigan region.

According to the census of 2000, there were 5, 002 people, 1, 977 households, and 1, 678 families residing in the Interlochen Zip Code Tabulation Area ( 49643 ), which also includes most of Inland Township as well as portions of Almira and Colfax townships in Benzie County along with the western portion of Green Township and the northwest corner of Grant Township.

The Ann Arbor Metropolitan Statistical Area ( MSA ) includes all of Washtenaw County, which had a population of 344, 791 as of 2010.

An 1865 San Francisco Pacific Railroad Bond approved in 1863 but delayed for two years by the opposition of the San Francisco Board of SupervisorsAlthough the Pacific Railroad eventually benefited the Bay Area, the City and County of San Francisco obstructed financing it during the early years of 1863-1865.
