Mercyful Fate was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1981 from the remaining members of Hank Shermann's band Brats and King Diamond's band Black Rose.

On their return, Downey rejoined the band and at the beginning of 1979 they recorded Black Rose: A Rock Legend in Paris.

The term " black metal " was coined by the English band Venom with their second album Black Metal ( 1982 ).

The band played in this style on their first four albums: Bathory ( 1984 ), The Return of the Darkness and Evil ( 1985 ), Under the Sign of the Black Mark ( 1987 ) and Blood Fire Death ( 1988 ).

The album's release was followed by news that there would be no tour to promote the LP, that drummer Bevan was now playing drums for Black Sabbath and that bassist Kelly Groucutt had left the band.

Melodic death metal band The Black Dahlia Murder produced " Throne of Lunacy " and " Thy Horror Cosmic " based on the Cthulhu Mythos.

After performing for the short-lived Washington D. C .- based band State of Alert in 1980, Rollins fronted the California hardcore punk band Black Flag from August 1981 until mid-1986.

Along with the fellow Washington, D. C. hardcore band Bad Brains and California band Black Flag, Minor Threat set the standard for many hardcore punk bands in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the time between the release of the band's second seven-inch EP and the Out of Step record, the band briefly split when guitarist Lyle Preslar moved to Illinois to attend college for a semester at Northwestern University, Preslar was a member of Big Black for a few tempestuous rehearsals.

Macainsh played with John Farnham on his Whispering Jack Tour and with Dave Warner's from the Suburbs, in 1988 he put together and managed a very successful AC / DC tribute band called Back in Black who went on to support Skyhooks on their comeback tour.

Some of speed metal's earlier influences include Black Sabbath's " Children of the Grave ", Deep Purple's " Fireball " and Queen's " Stone Cold Crazy " ( which was eventually covered by the thrash metal band Metallica ), from their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack, and Deep Purple's song " Highway Star ", from their album Machine Head.

None of the band came from Guildford: Black is from Ilford, Burnel from Notting Hill, Cornwell from Kentish Town and Greenfield from Brighton, while Wärmling came from Sweden and returned there after leaving the band.

Cornwell was a blues musician prior to forming the band and had briefly been a bandmate of Richard Thompson, Burnel had been a classical guitarist who had performed with symphony orchestras, Jet Black was a jazz drummer, and Dave Greenfield had played at military bases in Germany.

In May 2006, Roberts left the band, and The Stranglers were now back to a four-piece line-up: Burnel, Black, Greenfield and Warne, with the lead vocals shared between Warne and Burnel.

On 4 November 2007, the band ( with Black ) played a sell-out gig at the Roundhouse in Camden, North London, marking the thirtieth anniversary of their headline run at the same venue in 1977.

However, Black was back with the band for their UK tour later in the year.

Singleton also played in local band Black Cat Bone.
