The Genoa Group of Eight Summit protest from July 18 to July 22, 2001 was one of the bloodiest protests in Western Europe's recent history, as evidenced by the wounding of hundreds of policemen and civilians forced to lock themselves inside of their homes and the death of a young Genoese anarchist named Carlo Giuliani — who was shot in the face while trying to throw a fire extinguisher on a police car — during two days of violence and rioting by fringe groups supported by the nonchalance of more consistent and peaceful masses of protesters, and the hospitalisation of several of those peaceful demonstrators just mentioned.

The 27th G8 summit in the city, in July 2001, was overshadowed by violent protests, with one protester, Carlo Giuliani, killed amid accusations of police brutality.

Carlo Giuliani (; 14 March 1978 – 20 July 2001 ) was an Italian anti-globalist who was shot dead by a police officer during the demonstrations against the Group of Eight summit that was held in Genoa from July 19 to July 21, 2001.

Carlo Giuliani, born in Rome, was the son of Giuliano Giuliani, a CGIL trade union activist, and Haidi Giuliani, who after his death would become a Senator for the Communist Refoundation Party.

In early 1938 Carlo Tresca, a leading Italian-American anarchist, publicly accused the Soviets of kidnapping Poyntz in order to prevent her defection.

Carlo Cafiero ( September 1, 1846 – July 17, 1892 ) was an Italian anarchist, champion of Mikhail Bakunin during the second half of the 19th century and one of the main proponents of anarcho-communism during the First International.

The anarchist and labor organiser Carlo Tresca was born there in 1879 and was active in the Italian Railroad Workers ' Federation until emigrating to the US in 1904, to escape a prison term.

In Italy, important successes were achieved with the cooperation of pentiti in the fight against terrorism ( especially against the Red Brigades ), by Carabinieri general Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa ( who was later killed by the Mafia ).
