South African wine has a history dating back to 1659, and at one time Constantia was considered one of the greatest wines in the world.

The success of Grange in competitions through the 1960s signalled that the New World had a genuinely world class wine for the first time since Constantia.

The Constantia name was in reference to the grand wine estate in the Cape " Groot Constantia ", with its world famous gabled Cape-Dutch homestead featuring as the model's emblem, while Kommando referred to the commando squads employed by the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War, or South African War.

Constantia, or vin de Constance, is a South African dessert wine.

But it was Hendrik Cloete, who bought the homestead in 1778, who really made Constantia famous, with an unfortified wine made from a blend of mostly Muscat de Frontignan ( Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains ), Pontac, red and white Muscadel and a little Chenin Blanc.

The wine that is produced at Groot Constantia is called Grand Constance and the original wine Vin de Constance is still produced at Klein Constantia.

* In Charles Dickens ' last ( and unfinished ) novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Constantia wine is served to the reverend Septimus by his mother.

* In Charles Baudelaire's ( Les fleurs du mal ) poem XXVI entitled sed non satiata Baudelaire compares the charms of his beloved to the pleasures of the night and Constantia wine: “ Even more than Constantia, than opium, than Nuits, I prefer the elixer of your mouth, where love performs its slow dance .”

Today, though most of the wine farms are no longer there, there are still a few old Cape Dutch houses like those found in Constantia.

He is pardoned by Constantine I as a result of the supplication of his wife Constantia ( who is Constantine's halfsister ), and banished to Thessalonica as a private citizen.

Eventually, on co-founder FitzTurgis ' death, control of the abbey passed to his son Roger, now ' de Wickersley ,' and then eventually to a granddaughter Constantia, who married William de Livet ( Levett ), a family of Norman origin who were lords of the nearby village of Hooton Levitt ( or Levett ).
