The Constantia name was in reference to the grand wine estate in the Cape " Groot Constantia ", with its world famous gabled Cape-Dutch homestead featuring as the model's emblem, while Kommando referred to the commando squads employed by the Boer forces during the Anglo-Boer War, or South African War.

The town was rebuilt under the name of Constantia by Constantius II ( 337 – 361 CE ) and became an Episcopal seat, the most famous occupant of which was Saint Epiphanius.

But it was Hendrik Cloete, who bought the homestead in 1778, who really made Constantia famous, with an unfortified wine made from a blend of mostly Muscat de Frontignan ( Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains ), Pontac, red and white Muscadel and a little Chenin Blanc.
The wine that is produced at Groot Constantia is called Grand Constance and the original wine Vin de Constance is still produced at Klein Constantia.
