Ter-Petrosyan had been elected head of government in 1990, when the National Democratic Union party defeated the Armenian Communist Party.

When Tennessee seceded from the Union in 1861, Johnson was a Democratic U. S. Senator from Tennessee and was dedicated to Jacksonian Democracy, nationalism and limited government.

His failure to make the National Union brand a genuine party made Johnson an independent during his presidency, though he was supported by Democrats and later rejoined the party briefly as a Democratic Senator from Tennessee in 1875 until his death that year.

Franjo Tuđman's Croatian Democratic Union ( HDZ ) won by a relatively slim margin against Ivica Račan's reformed communist Party of Democratic Change ( SDP ).

Tuđman died in 1999 and in the early 2000 parliamentary elections, the nationalist Croatian Democratic Union ( HDZ ) government was replaced by a center-left coalition under the Social Democratic Party of Croatia, with Ivica Račan as prime minister.

Major political powers are Unity of Aran-Aranese Nationalist Party ( Socialists ' Party of Catalonia local section, the governing party ) and Aranese Democratic Convergence ( Democratic Convergence of Catalonia local section ).

In 1974, he passed definitively to the political sphere on founding the political party called Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya ( CDC ) ( Democratic Convergence of Catalonia in English ), of which he was the first Secretary.
