Salieri's Chimney Sweep and Mozart's work for the same company in 1782, Die Entführung aus dem Serail ( The Abduction from the Seraglio ) would be the only two major successes to emerge from the German singspiel experiment, and only Mozart's opera would survive on the stage beyond the close of the 18th century.

His last opera was a German language singspiel Die Neger, ( The Negroes ), a melodrama set in colonial Virginia with a text by Georg Friedrich Treitschke ( the author of the libretto for Beethoven's Fidelio ) performed in 1804 and was a complete failure.

Die Entführung aus dem Serail ( K. 384 ; The Abduction from the Seraglio ; also known as Il Seraglio ) is an opera Singspiel in three acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Out of this interest came Die Sieger ( The Victors, 1856 ) a sketch Wagner wrote for an opera based on a story from the life of Buddha.

Instances of this substitution are Mozart's Symphony No. 32 in G, which is an overture to an unknown opera, and his overtures to Die Entführung aus dem Serail and to Lo sposo deluso, in both of which cases the curtain rises at a point which throws a remarkable dramatic light upon the peculiar form.

Homage has been paid to Weber by 20th century composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky, Mahler ( who completed Weber's unfinished comic opera Die drei Pintos and made revisions of Euryanthe and Oberon ) and Hindemith ( composer of the popular Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber ).

Erwartung and Die Glückliche Hand, by Schoenberg, and Wozzeck, an opera by Alban Berg ( based on the play Woyzeck by Georg Büchner ), are examples of Expressionist works.
