With the success of Lucia di Lammermoor in September 1835, Donizetti moved on to stagings of Maria Stuarda, the first under that name at La Scala in late 1835.

By the time Donizetti arrived in Venice on 6 January 1836, the score of Belisario was almost finished, and because of delays, he had time to hear several of the proposed singers in a performance of Rossini's L ' assedio di Corinto given on 12 January, the day before rehearsals of Belisario were to begin.

Its first performance in Vienna was at the Kärtnertortheater on 14 May 1843, a production in which Donizetti participated and added the comic baritone duet " Cheti, cheti, immantinente " from a discarded portion of his unperformed opera L ' ange de Nisida.

Donizetti revised the score for a French version which debuted on 6 August 1839 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris.

However, Donizetti and Verdi in their vocal writing went on to emphasise the top fifth of the baritone voice, rather than its lower notes — thus generating a more brilliant sound.

Luckily, the gramophone was invented early enough to capture on disc the voices of the top Italian Verdi and Donizetti baritones of the last two decades of the 19th century, whose operatic performances were characterized by considerable re-creative freedom and a high degree of technical finish.

Smetana's champions have recognised the major influences on his work as Liszt, Wagner and Berlioz – the " progressives " – while those same advocates have often played down the significance of " traditionalist " composers such as Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi and Meyerbeer.

It was the first of a fashion for operas with Scottish settings and based on Scott's works, of which Gaetano Donizetti Lucia di Lammermoor is the most familiar.

He went on to sing in two more Donizetti premieres, the title role in Gianni di Parigi ( 1839, La Scala ), and Oliverio in Adelia ( 1841, Teatro Apollo ).

In what Fleming has described as " the worst night of her operatic life " she was roundly booed on the opening night of Lucrezia Borgia by Donizetti in July, 1998 at La Scala.

Maria Stuarda ( Mary Stuart ) is a tragic opera, ( tragedia lirica ), in two acts, by Gaetano Donizetti, to a libretto by Giuseppe Bardari, based on Andrea Maffei's translation of Friedrich Schiller's 1800 play Maria Stuart.
