The Public Address events include Informative Speaking, Persuasive Speaking, Rhetorical Criticism, and After Dinner Speaking ; the Limited Preparation events include Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking ; and the interpretation events include Poetry, Prose, Dramatic Interpretation, Dramatic Duo Interpretation ( in which at least one dramatic piece is presented by two speakers working together ), Duo Interpretation ( in which two speakers present a scene or scenes from any source ), and Programmed Oral Interpretation ( in which speakers use material from multiple genres with a common theme ).

Extemporaneous speaking is split into two events, International ( Foreign ) Extemp, and United States ( Domestic ) Extemp, and Extemp Commentary is offered at the national tournament as a supplemental event, while Impromptu Speaking and Storytelling are offered limited preparation consolatory events.

Extemporaneous Speaking, Extempore Speaking, or simply Extemp, is a speech given at a tournament with little preparation.

There is also the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions, held each May at Northwestern University.

In college forensics, as well as at a number of large tournaments like the Tournament of Champions in Extemporaneous Speaking at Northwestern University, the Barkley Forum at Emory University, the Harvard Invitational and the NCFL National Championship, there is only one mixed category for Extemporaneous Speaking, referred to as simply ' extemp ' ( with the event code ' EX ').

Debaters representing Cary Academy have also performed well at other national tournaments, including the Wake Forest University Tournament, and the University of Florida Blue Key Tournament as well as the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions and the George Mason Patriot Games.

The team competes in a wide variety of events including Impromptu, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Prose and Poetry, Duo, Dramatic Interpretation, Original Interpretation, and Student Congress and has competed at the following tournaments: CSU Fullerton, Novice Individual Events, and La Costa Canyon Winter Classic.

Additionally, the Speech team placed 5th at the 2012 VHSL AAA State Championships, winning 2nd place finishes in both Impromptu and Extemporaneous speaking.

On the national stage, in addition to the NCFL national championship, the team also had a member reach the Semi-Finals of the Extemporaneous Speaking Tournament of Champions at Northwestern University, the octafinal round of Domestic Extemp at NFL Nationals, and the Semi-Finals of Student Congress at NCFL, all during the 2011-2012 school year.
