United won the League championship but were denied the 20th century's first " double " when they controversially lost the 1957 FA Cup final to Aston Villa.

Yet somehow they reached their second consecutive FA Cup final, and the big day at Wembley coincided with Busby's return to work.

Further success with Manchester United came at last when they beat Leicester City 3 – 1 in the FA Cup final of 1963, with Charlton finally earning a winners ' medal in his third final.

After World War II, the club reached the FA Cup Final twice, losing in 1946 and winning in 1947.

Charlton were finalists in the 1946 FA Cup, but lost 4 – 1 to Derby County.

But they made amends with their performance in the FA Cup, reaching the final once again.

In 1987 Charlton also returned to Wembley for the first time since the 1947 FA Cup final for the Full Members Cup final against Blackburn.

Charlton continued their poor run of form to go 18 games without a win, a new club record, before finally achieving a 1 – 0 away victory over Norwich City in an FA Cup Third Round replay.

In 1938 the highest attendance to date at the ground was recorded at over 75, 000 for a FA Cup match against Aston Villa.

In the 1940s, Charlton used a design featuring a robin sitting in a football within a shield, sometimes with the letters CAFC in the four quarters of the shield, which was worn for the 1946 FA Cup Final.

They reached the 1915 FA Cup Final, where they lost to Sheffield United at Old Trafford, and finished 3rd in the First Division in 1920, the club's best league campaign to that point.

The following season saw UEFA create the European Champions ' Cup, but after objections from The Football League and the FA Chelsea were persuaded to withdraw from the competition before it started.

They were on course for a treble of League, FA Cup and League Cup going into the final stages of the 1964 – 65 season, winning the League Cup but faltering late on in the other two.

In three seasons the side were beaten in three major semi-finals and were FA Cup runners-up.

Under Docherty's successor, Dave Sexton, Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1970, beating Leeds United 2 – 1 in a final replay.

Chelsea's form in the new Premier League was unconvincing, although they did reach the 1994 FA Cup Final.

He added several top international players to the side, as the club won the FA Cup in 1997 and established themselves as one of England's top sides again.

Gullit was replaced by Gianluca Vialli, who led the team to victory in the League Cup Final and the Cup Winners ' Cup Final in 1998, the FA Cup in 2000 and their first appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2 – 0 to West Ham United.

The holders of the FA Cup are Chelsea, who defeated Liverpool 2 – 1 in the 2012 final for their fourth triumph in six years and seventh overall.

The only seasons in recent times when this pattern was not followed were 1999 – 2000, when most rounds were played a few weeks earlier than normal as an experiment, and 2010 – 2011 when the FA Cup Final was played before the Premier League season had finished, in order to allow the stadium to be ready for the UEFA Champions League final.

This was the only time between 1923 and 2000 that the FA Cup final or the FA Cup Final replay was held at a stadium other than Wembley.

At the end of the final, the winning team is presented with a trophy, also known as the " FA Cup ", which they hold until the following year's final.

A new, larger, trophy was bought by the FA in 1911 designed and manufactured by Fattorini's of Bradford and won by Bradford City in its first outing, the only time a team from Bradford has reached the final.

He reached the two-legged final of the FA Youth Cup with Chesterfield in 1956, losing 4 – 3 on aggregate to the Manchester United team of the famous Busby Babes.

In 1961, Leicester City beat Sheffield United to reach the FA Cup final at Wembley, the first of three they would manage that decade.

While in the FA Cup final against Manchester United, United were looking for their first trophy since the Munich air disaster of five years earlier which had claimed the lives of eight of the Busby Babes whom Banks had faced as an adolescent.

Banks joined Stoke City and maintained his England place, while Shilton lost in Leicester's third FA Cup final of the 1960s ( the 1969 game against Manchester City ) and began to make his name.

Banks later began a business which distributed tickets for big events to corporate clients, but this fell into a mini-scandal when he received a restricted ban on getting tickets for the FA Cup final after some attributed to his company fell into the wrong hands.

While he was at Everton, they reached the FA Cup final for the third year in a row but they lost 3 – 1 to Liverpool, despite Lineker giving them an early lead when he outpaced Alan Hansen to score.

After becoming player-manager on the retirement of Joe Fagan in the 1985 close season, Dalglish selected himself for just 21 First Division games in 1985 – 86 as Liverpool won the double, but he started the FA Cup final win over Everton.

Liverpool achieved this by winning the League Championship by two points over Everton ( Dalglish himself scored the winner in a 1 – 0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to secure the title on the final day of the season ), and the FA Cup by beating Everton in the final.

He returned to playing in an FA cup tie against West Bromwich Albion on 1 March ; the game was a draw and United won the replay 1 – 0.

Vialli was sacked in favour of Claudio Ranieri, who guided Chelsea to the 2002 FA Cup Final and Champions League qualification in 2002 – 03.

Under Mourinho, Chelsea became the fifth English team to win back-to-back league championships since the Second World War ( 2004 – 05 and 2005 – 06 ), in addition to winning an FA Cup ( 2007 ) and two League Cups ( 2005 and 2007 ).

In 2009, caretaker manager Guus Hiddink guided Chelsea to another FA Cup success, and in 2009 – 10, his successor Carlo Ancelotti led them to their first league and FA Cup " Double ", becoming the first English club to score 100 league goals in a season since 1963.

Under caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea won their seventh FA Cup, and their first UEFA Champions League title, beating Bayern Munich 4 – 3 on penalties, the first London club to win the trophy.

The club progressed all the way to the semi-final of that season's FA Cup, a run that included an 8 – 3 away win at Luton Town.

A mixed bag of league performances followed, although the club also reached another FA Cup semi-final during the 1935 – 36 season.

The FA Cup was first held in 1871 – 72.

Defending holders Manchester United did not enter the 1999 – 2000 FA Cup, as they were already in the inaugural Club World Championship, with the club stating that entering both tournaments would overload their fixture schedule and make it more difficult to defend their Champions League and Premiership titles.

Since the start of the 1994 – 95 season, the FA Cup has been sponsored.

On 16 April 1963, an astonishing game at Filbert Street against Manchester United, which saw both Ken Keyworth and Denis Law score a hat-trick each, ended in a 4 – 3 victory for Leicester, which meant Leicester sat top of the First Division and 11 days later Banks put in one of the performances of his career to keep out Liverpool as Leicester beat them 1 – 0 in the FA Cup semi-final despite being completely outplayed all game.
