It is the seat of local government for Fermanagh District Council, and is also the county town of Fermanagh as well as its largest town.

The greater part of its land border is shared with three counties of Northern Ireland: County Londonderry, County Tyrone and County Fermanagh.

Each of 28 county boards takes control of its own affairs ( all of the Irish counties except Fermanagh, Leitrim and Sligo ), with the number of clubs ranging from 58 in Cork to one in Leitrim.

The gillaroo ( Salmo stomachius ), a richly colored species of trout found in the Irish lake, lough Melvin in County Fermanagh, has a gizzard which is used to aid the digestion of water snails, the main component of its diet.

Following his death in 1792 his estate was inherited by his niece Mary Verney ( later created Baroness Fermanagh, in the second creation ): a parsimonious woman, unlike her extravagant uncle, she had the house reduced to its present size.

The town was badly hit economically by the partition of Ireland in 1921 because of its location on the border with County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.

Throughout its history, Fermanagh and South Tyrone has seen a precarious balance between unionist and nationalist voters, though in recent years the nationalists have had a slight majority.

The Clogher Valley Railway ran from Tynan, County Armagh, to Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh, with Fivemiletown being one of its main stations.

The club, founded in 1975, hails from Ballinamallard, near Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, and plays its home matches at Ferney Park.

It served there until January 1985 with south east Fermanagh as its primary focus.

Another operational tour in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland followed from December 1990 to May 1991, after which the battalion was able to complete the specialist conversion training required for its airmobile role.

On its southern slope can be seen the remains of one of the oldest castles belonging to the Maguire Clan, the ancient Lords of Fermanagh.

It also contested elections as a party in its own right, electing six councillors in the 1973 local council elections in the Fermanagh and Dungannon areas, although this was reduced to 2 members of Fermanagh council in the next election in 1977.

For 30 miles from Crossdoney in County Cavan to Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, it is difficult to distinguish the river as it winds its way through interconnected loughs or parts of loughs nestling among the drumlin hills of Cavan and south Fermanagh.

In the aftermath of the attack the IRA stated that it had made a mistake and its Fermanagh Brigade was stood down.

In 1989, in the first local elections held in County Fermanagh after the bombing, Sinn Féin lost four of its eight council seats and was overtaken by the SDLP as the largest nationalist party.

In the area of the glen the land rises dramatically before falling again into the Fermanagh countryside.

These were joined in 1584 / 5 by the counties of Armagh, Coleraine, Donegal, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone.

On one occasion where he met with relatives of the hunger strike, he refused to meet the family of Bobby Sands, a MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone and O / C of the Provisional IRA hunger strikers, and the first to die on this strike, along with the sister of Raymond McCreesh, who had died on 21 May.

However in 1967 he was dismissed for Ministerial impropriety involving the purchase of land he knew was to be purchased by Fermanagh County Council for the development of Enniskillen / St Angelo Airport.

He remained active in the Ulster Unionists for some years and was the party's unsuccessful candidate in the bitter April 1981 by-election in Fermanagh and South Tyrone caused by the death of the sitting MP Frank Maguire, West received 29, 046 votes and was defeated by Bobby Sands standing on an Anti-H-Block / Armagh Political Prisoner ticket with 30, 493 votes, Sands died twenty-six days after his election.

In 1970, he went to Northern Ireland and was attached to the South Fermanagh Battalion of the IRA and later became Officer Commanding ( OC ) of the IRA in the Fermanagh / Monaghan / Armagh area.

Owen Carron, running for the IRA the same day in the by-election for the Fermanagh / South Tyrone constituency that had been held by Bobby Sands, won a place in the House of Commons.

Fermanagh is part of the Fermanagh and South Tyrone Parliamentary Constituency, renowned for high levels of voting and for electing Provisional IRA hunger-striker Bobby Sands as a Member of Parliament in the Fermanagh and South Tyrone by-election, April 1981, shortly before his death.

Outside the prison in a major publicity coup, Sands was nominated for Parliament and won the Fermanagh and South Tyrone by-election.
