Emperor Frederick II regained the city and the church by treaty in the 13th century, while he himself was under a ban of excommunication, leading to the curious result of the holiest church in Christianity being laid under interdict.

During the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the city state was annexed by King Frederick the Great of the Kingdom of Prussia.

Palermo was the preferred city of the Emperor Frederick II.

* June 1 – Matthias of Hungary takes Vienna in his conquest of Austria ( from Frederick III ) and makes the city his capital.

In March 1153, Frederick concluded the treaty of Constance with the Pope whereby, in return for his coronation, he promised to defend the papacy, to make no peace with king Roger II of Sicily or other enemies of the Church without the consent of Eugene and to help Eugene regain control of the city of Rome.
