Among the first European settlers in the area were a group of Scots settled in Freehold Township in about 1682-85, followed several years later by Dutch settlers.

West Freehold is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located within Freehold Township, in Monmouth County, New Jersey.

According to the United States Census Bureau, West Freehold CDP had a total area of 5. 927 square miles ( 15. 350 km < sup > 2 </ sup >), of which, 5. 913 square miles ( 15. 314 km < sup > 2 </ sup >) of it is land and 0. 014 square miles ( 0. 036 km < sup > 2 </ sup >) of it ( 0. 24 %) is water.

Jackson Township was incorporated as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 6, 1844, from portions of Dover Township ( now Toms River Township ), Freehold Township and Upper Freehold Township, while the area was still part of Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Although there is no conclusive evidence of a Roman presence in the area, an earthwork shown on early mapping of the area, at the location of present-day Freehold Street, is said to have been a Roman camp, but it has also been argued that it may be of Viking origin or date from the Civil War.

A year later, on 2 March 1930, a new station was opened, to serve a growing suburban area, and named after the Birkbeck Freehold Lane Society, whose name derived from the Yorkshire philanthropist Dr Birkbeck.

This branch was opened by the Altona and Laverton Bay Freehold and Investment Co. Ltd. in order to encourage people to buy their land in the area.

The route of the freeway was revised in 1972 to head north of Interstate 195 to the Route 18 freeway in Colts Neck Township, intersecting the Route 33 bypass of Freehold Borough.

CR 539 also passes through the township, but there are no intersections prior to it entering Robbinsville Township / Upper Freehold on the south and East Windsor on the north.

Upper Freehold Township borders the borough on the southwest and Millstone Township on the north and east.

It runs from an intersection with U. S. Route 9 in Freehold Township north to an intersection with Route 34 and County Route 516 Spur in Matawan.

Route 79 begins at an intersection with U. S. Route 9 in Freehold Township, heading north on South Street, a two-lane divided highway that soon becomes an undivided road.

The highway runs to the north of Allentown before briefly forming the border between Robbinsville Township to the north and Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County to the south as it reaches the interchange with CR 524 / CR 539.

The bypass from near County Route 527 in Manalapan to Halls Mills Road in Freehold was completed and opened in segments from 1971 – 1988 ; however, the remainder of the bypass east to Fairfield Road in Howell was not completed until 2003.

The left sign is a green square that reads New York right arrow and the right sign is an old shield that reads Interstate 195 right. Upon passing under CR 524 / CR 539, I-195 fully enters Upper Freehold Township in Monmouth County and continues east through a mix of woodland and farmland.

On April 30, 2010, NJDOT started a project to repave the expressway both eastbound and westbound from just east of the Turnpike overpasses near Exit 7 in Robbinsville Township to Exit 11 in Upper Freehold Township.

The Freehold and Jamesburg Agricultural Railroad opened in 1853 from the C & A at Jamesburg east to Freehold, also under C & A control.

The Freehold Regional High School District is a public regional school district serving students in grades 9-12 from eight communities in western Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States.

This high density is not formed from high-rise buildings ; instead, it has come about through the subdivision of large mid-rise Victorian and Georgian terraced houses ( generally of some four to six floors ) into flats.

Some Georgian architecture and Victorian era terraced housing survive in patches: for example Arbour Square, the eastern side of Stepney Green, and the streets around Matlock Street.
