Minh then went to Gia Long Palace, and Minh sent an armored personnel carrier to transport Diệm and Nhu, while the others prepared for the ceremonial and televised handover of power to the junta.

In 1971, Minh claimed that Thiệu had caused the deaths by hesitating and delaying the attack by his 5th Division on Gia Long Palace.

Nhu's agents had fitted the home with a direct phone line to the palace, so the coup generals believed that the brothers were still besieged inside Gia Long.

Gia is for Gia Định, the old name of Saigon ; Long is for Thăng Long, the old name of Hanoi.

Hence Gia Long implied the unification of the country.

As China for centuries had referred to Đại Việt as Annam, Gia Long asked the Manchu Qing emperor to rename the country, from Annam to Nam Việt.

Towards the end of the 18th century a rebellion overthrew the Nguyễn, but one of its members, Emperor Gia Long, by the aid of a French force, in 1801 acquired sway over the whole of present-day Vietnam ( Annam, Tongking and Cochinchina ).

Before this, in 1787, Gia Long had concluded a treaty with Louis XVI, whereby in return for a promise of aid he ceded Tourane and Pulo-Condore to the French.

From 1802, under the reign of emperor Gia Long, there were always two Tổng Trấn who directly ruled Vietnam's northern part named Thành Long ( Hanoi and surrounding territories ) and the southern part named Gia Định ( Saigon and surrounding territories ) while Nguyen emperors ruled only the middle part named Vùng Kinh Kỳ ( Huế and surrounding territories ).

Nguyen managed to recapture Saigon by 1788 and later ascended as Emperor Gia Long in 1802.
