On my first Guy Fawkes Day here, I found Catholics as well as non-Catholics celebrating with the traditional fireworks and bonfires, and was told that most Englishmen either do not know or are not concerned with the historical significance of the day.

A Birmingham newspaper printed in a column for children an article entitled `` The True Story of Guy Fawkes '', which began:

`` When you pile your `` guy '' on the bonfire tomorrow night, I wonder how much of the true story of Guy Fawkes you will remember??

In the 355 years since the first Guy Fawkes Night, much of the story has been forgotten, so here is a reminder ''.

Guy Fawkes ( 13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606 ), also known as Guido Fawkes, the name he adopted while fighting for the Spanish in the Low Countries, was a member of a group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

In Britain, the 5th of November is variously called Bonfire Night, Fireworks Night, or Guy Fawkes Night.

In addition the increasing popularity of Guy Fawkes Night ( 5 November ) from 1605 on saw Halloween become eclipsed in Britain with the notable exception of Scotland.

The themes and settings of Through the Looking-Glass make it a kind of mirror image of Wonderland: the first book begins outdoors, in the warm month of May ( 4 May ), uses frequent changes in size as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of playing cards ; the second opens indoors on a snowy, wintry night exactly six months later, on 4 November ( the day before Guy Fawkes Night ), uses frequent changes in time and spatial directions as a plot device, and draws on the imagery of chess.

Fireworks in New Zealand are available from the 2nd to the November 5, around Guy Fawkes Night, and may be purchased only by those 18 years of age and older ( up from 14 years pre-2007 ).

The Guys would mass on the edge of the town from daybreak on Guy Fawkes Night, wearing masks or bizarre disguises and armed with clubs and lighted torches.

The heath is host to an annual fireworks display on the Saturday in November closest to Guy Fawkes Night.

Annual events include the Carshalton Fireworks a charity fireworks display at Carshalton Park on the Saturday nearest to Guy Fawkes Night, a summer carnival on the second Saturday of June, a beer festival over the first Bank Holiday weekend in May, the Environmental Fair also held in Carshalton Park on the August Bank Holiday Monday.

** The Fugitive Guy: Every so often, Letterman would introduce " Roger Campbell " ( Elliott, wearing an extremely bad toupée ), a new member of the Late Night crew.

** The Regulator Guy: A series of expensive-looking promos for a Terminator-like action character aired on " Late Night " over a period of several months, with Elliott playing the super-cool half-human, half-mechanical " Regulator Guy ," even speaking with a bad Schwarzenegger-esque accent.

The pottery wheel scene is very well known and often parodied, most notably in Saturday Night Live, Family Guy (" The Story on Page One "), All's Well, Ends Well, Naked Gun 2½, Loaded Weapon 1, The Penguins of Madagascar, Futurama (" Bendless Love " and " Bender's Game "), Community (" Beginner Pottery "), Victorious (" Survival of the Hottest "), Wallace & Gromit (" A Matter of Loaf and Death "), 6teen (" Unhappy Anniversary ") and Ellen (" Alone Again ...

In the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth countries, bonfires are lit on Guy Fawkes Night a yearly celebration held on the evening of 5 November to mark the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to destroy the House of Lords in London.

1831 saw Phillpotts as the victim of the Guy Fawkes Night custom of burning effigies of clergymen ; knowing his reputation he took action by requesting protection, thus the 7th Yeomanry Cavalry filled the palace at Exeter, whilst the crowd in the cathedral yard burned Phillpotts in effigy ; ".... hollow turnip as head and candle as nose, clad in mitre and lawn sleeves ..." ( Chadwick I, 1997, p 29 )

Later that month, he created the role of Captain Wentworth in Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse's Kissing Time, followed in 1920 by the role of René in A Night Out.
