Matcham was a prolific theatrical architect and also designed several London theatres, including the London Palladium, the London Coliseum and the Hackney Empire.

His father was a tailor's cutter and he became interested in acting after visits to the Hackney Empire.

This theatre was rebuilt during 1894 by Frank Matcham, the architect of the Hackney Empire.
