Robert A. Heinlein: A Reader's Companion.

Group marriage has been a theme in some works of science fiction — especially the later novels of Robert A. Heinlein, such as Stranger in a Strange Land, Friday, Time Enough for Love, and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress.

Robert A. Heinlein dedicated his 1985 novel The Cat Who Walks Through Walls to Anderson and eight of the other members of the Citizens ' Advisory Council on National Space Policy.

Within the framework of his science fiction stories, Heinlein repeatedly addressed certain social themes: the importance of individual liberty and self-reliance, the obligation individuals owe to their societies, the influence of organized religion on culture and government, and the tendency of society to repress nonconformist thought.

Heinlein was born on July 7, 1907, to Rex Ivar Heinlein ( an accountant ) and Bam Lyle Heinlein, in Butler, Missouri.

Heinlein and his second wife divorced in 1947, and on October 21 of the following year he married Virginia " Ginny " Gerstenfeld, to whom he would remain married until his death forty years later.

In 1953 – 1954, the Heinleins voyaged around the world ( mostly via ocean liner and cargo liner ), which Heinlein described in Tramp Royale, and which also provided background material for science fiction novels set aboard spaceships on long voyages, such as Podkayne of Mars and Friday.

Over time, Heinlein wrote many novels and short stories that deviated freely from the Future History on some points, while maintaining consistency in some other areas.

Heinlein was always aware of the editorial limitations put in place by the editors of his novels and stories, and while he observed those restrictions on the surface, was often successful in introducing ideas not often seen in other authors ' juvenile SF.

After a seven-year hiatus brought on by poor health, Heinlein produced five new novels in the period from 1980 ( The Number of the Beast ) to 1987 ( To Sail Beyond the Sunset ).

It concludes with a traditional Heinlein note, as in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress or Time Enough for Love that freedom is to be found on the frontiers.

Spider Robinson, a colleague, friend, and admirer of Heinlein, wrote Variable Star, based on an outline and notes for a juvenile novel that Heinlein prepared in 1955.

The idea for the story was pushed on Heinlein by editor John W. Campbell, and Heinlein wrote later that he had " had to re-slant it to remove racist aspects of the original story line " and that he did not " consider it to be an artistic success.

Gary Westfahl points out that " Heinlein is a problematic case for feminists ; on the one hand, his works often feature strong female characters and vigorous statements that women are equal to or even superior to men ; but these characters and statements often reflect hopelessly stereotypical attitudes about typical female attributes.

It is disconcerting, for example, that in Expanded Universe Heinlein calls for a society where all lawyers and politicians are women, essentially on the grounds that they possess a mysterious feminine practicality that men cannot duplicate.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Heinlein was deeply interested in Alfred Korzybski's General Semantics and attended a number of seminars on the subject.

Heinlein, " a handy short definition of almost all science fiction might read: realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method.

Sixth Column, also known under the title The Day After Tomorrow, is a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, based on a story by editor John W. Campbell, and set in a United States that has been conquered by the PanAsians, a combination of Chinese and Japanese.

Heinlein ’ s work on Campbell ’ s All was considerably more than just a re-slanting ; Campbell ’ s story was felt to be unpublishable as it stood, written in a pseudo-archaic dialect ( with occasional inconsistencies ), with no scientific explanations for the apparently miraculous powers of the American super-weapons.

The bulk of Heinlein ’ s work on the novel, e. g., the explanations of the weapons ’ effectiveness and the strategy for the American ’ s rebellion, are missing from All.

Sixth Column and Farnham's Freehold, another novel by Heinlein, both center on the issue of race.

Heinlein later expanded another of these anecdotes into " The Long Watch ".

It is the last of the " Lazarus Long " cycle of stories, involving time travel, parallel dimensions, free love, voluntary incest, and a concept that Heinlein named pantheistic solipsism, or World as Myth — the theory that universes are created by the act of imagining them, so that somewhere ( for example ) the Land of Oz is real.

Maureen lives through, and gives her ( sometimes contradictory ) viewpoints on many events in other Heinlein stories, most notably the 1917 visit from the future by " Ted Bronson " ( in actuality Lazarus Long ), told from Long's point of view in Time Enough for Love, D. D. Harriman's space program from The Man Who Sold the Moon and the rolling roads from The Roads Must Roll.

Col. Campbell is also eventually revealed to be a son of Lazarus Long, a Heinlein character originally introduced in Methuselah's Children and who reappeared in Time Enough for Love, The Number of the Beast, and To Sail Beyond the Sunset.

These stories were key points in the Future History, so Heinlein gave a rough description of Nehemiah Scudder which made his reign easy to visualize — a combination of John Calvin, Girolamo Savonarola, Joseph Franklin Rutherford, and Huey Long.
