Gordon continued to act on the stage throughout the 1930s, including notable runs as Mattie in Ethan Frome, Margery Pinchwife in William Wycherley's Restoration comedy The Country Wife at London's Old Vic and on Broadway, and Nora Helmer in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House at Central City, Colorado, and on Broadway.

A projected third installment in the series was derailed by the 1998 death of Ernst-Hugo Järegård, who played Helmer, one of the major characters.

However, due to the death in 1998 of Ernst-Hugo Järegård ( who played Stig Helmer ) and the subsequent deaths of Kirsten Rolffes ( Mrs Drusse ) and Morten Rotne Leffers who played the male dishwasher, the likelihood of a third series is now very remote.

In September 1998, following his selection as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the East Midlands, Helmer left his job as Managing Director of a Leicester textile company, Donisthorpe Ltd ( the UK subsidiary of a French textile multinational ), to campaign full time ahead of the 1999 euro-elections, and took up his new role as an MEP immediately afterwards.

Helmer also appeared in two FIFA World Cups, bowing out of international football in the second round clash of the 1998 edition against Mexico, when he was replaced before half-time by Christian Ziege.

At European level, Quorn is in the East Midlands constituency, which has five MEPs in the European Parliament ; Derek Clark ( UKIP / EFD ), Roger Helmer ( Con / ECR ), Emma McClarkin ( Con / ECR ), Bill Newton-Dunn ( LD / ALDE ) and Glenis Willmott ( Lab / S & D ).

He also appeared with Harris in the 1958 TV adaptation of Johnny Belinda and played Torvald Helmer to Harris ' Nora in a television version of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House ( 1959 ).

Järegård gained international attention when he took on the role of Doctor Helmer in Lars von Trier's highly acclaimed mini-series Riget and Riget II ( aka The Kingdom I & II ).

In every episode, two dishwashers ( each with Down syndrome ) in the cellar discuss the strange happenings at Riget and Stig Helmer stands on the roof and screams his famous catchphrase: Danskjävlar ( Danish scum has been a common translation, but Danish bastards or even Danish fuckers would be closer to the context to what he means ).

Many of the characters derived their names from the Danish original ( e. g. Sigrid Drusse became Sally Druse, Stig Helmer became Dr. Stegman ).

Masculine gay men did exist but were marginalised ( Warren 1972, 1974 ; Helmer 1963 ) and formed their own communities, such as leather and Western ( Goldstein, 1975 ), and / or donned working class outfits ( Fischer, 1972 ) such as sailor uniforms ( Cory and LeRoy, 1963 ).

At the RSC in 1982, she played Nora Helmer in Adrian Noble's memorable production of Ibsen's A Doll's House ( for which she was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival ).

There he also received instruction in piano and counterpoint from professor Gustav Jacobsthal, and associated closely with Ernest Munch ( the brother of his former teacher ), organist of St William church, who was also a passionate admirer of J. S.
