The plant Hieracium umbellatum is found growing in two different habitats in Sweden.

These habitats alternate along the coast of Sweden and the habitat that the seeds of Hieracium umbellatum land in, determine the phenotype that grows.

On anthills, and in the more disturbed turf that is especially a feature of the impact area, mouse-ear hawkweed ( Hieracium pilosella ) is abundant together with sheep's fescue ( Festuca ovina ) and wild thyme.

Many members of the genus Pilosella reproduce both by stolons ( runners like those of strawberries ) and by seeds, whereas true Hieracium species reproduce only by seeds.

In Pilosella, many individual plants are capable of forming both normal sexual and asexual ( apomictic ) seeds, whereas individual plants of Hieracium only produce one kind of seeds.

Another difference is that all species of Pilosella have leaves with smooth ( entire ) margins whereas most species of Hieracium have distinctly dentate to deeply cut or divided leaves.

Hieracium species are native to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Central America and South America.

The Spotted Salamander or Yellow-spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma maculatum ) is a mole salamander common in the eastern United States and Canada.

Ambystoma maculatum has several methods of defense, including hiding in burrows or leaf litter, autotomy of the tail, and a toxic milky liquid they excrete when perturbed.

Eggs of A. maculatum can have a symbiotic relationship with a green alga, Oophila amblystomatis.

Ramsons leaves are easily mistaken for lily of the valley, sometimes also those of Colchicum autumnale and Arum maculatum.
