* In the 1980s, talk show host Wally George often sparred with and ridiculed members of the Flat Earth Society on his show Hot Seat.

Modern swing dance bands active in the U. S. during the 1990s and 2000s include many contemporary jazz big bands, swing revival bands with a national presence such as Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers ( based in San Francisco ), and local / regional jazz bands that specialize in 1930s-1940s swing / Lindy dance music, such as The Swingout Big Band, White Heat Swing Orchestra, and Beantown Swing Orchestra ( Boston ), The Boilermaker Jazz Band ( Pittsburgh ), the Southside Aces ( Minneapolis ), Gordon Webster Septet ( New York ), Jonathan Stout and His Campus Five ( Los Angeles ) and The Jonathan Stout Orchestra featuring Hilary Alexander ( Los Angeles ), The Flat Cats ( Chicago ), The Gina Knight Orchestra ( Chicago and Joliet, IL ), the Solomon Douglas Swingtet and the Tom Cunningham Orchestra ( Washington, D. C .), Sonoran Swing ( Arizona ), and The Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra ( Los Angeles ).

In Hot, Flat, and Crowded, he says that " any car company that gets taxpayer money must demonstrate a plan for transforming every vehicle in its fleet to a hybrid-electric engine with flex-fuel capability, so its entire fleet can also run on next generation cellulosic ethanol ".

Also in 1995, the band collaborated on the song " Still Flat " for the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Bothered produced by the Red Hot Organization.

The duo released two albums with the Maniacs, 1997's Love Among the Ruins, which contained a cover of the Roxy Music song " More Than This " that reached number 25 on the U. S. Hot 100 chart, and 1999's The Earth Pressed Flat.

In the United States, " Why Do You Love Me " gave Garbage its first showing on the Billboard Hot 100 in six years, since " Special " reached No. 52 in May 1999 ; and the band's fifth Modern Rock top ten, and first since " I Think I'm Paranoid " spent the month of September 1998 at # 6.

Of his singles, eight have reached the number one position on the Hot Country Songs charts: " Why ", " She's Country ", " Big Green Tractor ", " The Truth ", " Don't You Wanna Stay " ( a duet with Kelly Clarkson ), " Dirt Road Anthem ", " Fly Over States ", and " Take a Little Ride ".

His seventh consecutive Top 40 hit on the country charts, it is also his first Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and became his second number-one hit, and his first since " Why " in May 2006.

The album's title song received some pop radio airplay and crossed over to No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100, and " 1974 ( We Were Young )" and " Saved By Love " also charted as Adult Contemporary songs.
