He was born at the Château de Rosny near Mantes-la-Jolie into a branch of the House of Bethune, a noble family originating in Artois, and was brought up in the Reformed faith, a Huguenot.

Margaret of Dampierre ( 13 April 1350 – 16 / 21 March 1405 ) was the last Countess of Flanders ( as Margaret III ) of the House of Dampierre, Countess of Artois and Countess Palatine of Burgundy ( as Margaret II ) and twice Duchess consort of Burgundy.

The Flemish comital House of Dampierre had been French vassals, who held territory around the affluent cities of Bruges and Ghent, but also adjacent lands in former Lower Lorraine east of the Scheldt river (" Imperial Flanders ") including the exclave of Mechelen, which were a fief of the Holy Roman Empire, and furthermore the neighbouring French County of Artois.

The Allee House, still standing on the refuge, was built in 1753 by Abraham Allee, a Huguenot refugee from Artois, France.
