The term epískopos was not from the earliest times clearly distinguished from the term presbýteros (" elder ", " senior ", nowadays used to signify a priest ), but the term was already clearly used in the sense of the order or office of bishop, distinct from that of priest in the writings of Ignatius of Antioch ( died c. 108 ), and sources from the middle of the 2nd century undoubtedly set forth that all the chief centres of Christianity recognized and had the office of bishop, using a form of organization that remained universal until the Protestant Reformation.

Eschatology is an ancient branch of study in Christian theology, presumably starting with the Olivet discourse, The Sheep and the Goats, and other discourses of end times by Jesus, with the doctrine of the Second Coming of Christ first touched on by Paul of Tarsus and Ignatius of Antioch ( c. 35 – 107 AD ), then given more consideration by the Christian apologist, Justin Martyr ( c. 100 – 165 ).

The earliest recorded use of the terms Christianity ( Greek ) and Catholic ( Greek ), dates to this period, the 2nd century, attributed to Ignatius of Antioch c. 107.

It is the term by which the rite is referred to by the Didache ( late 1st or early 2nd century ), Ignatius of Antioch ( who died between 98 and 117 ) and Justin Martyr ( writing between 147 and 167 ).

Assuming Ignatius ' view was the Apostolic teaching and practice, the line of succession was unbroken and passed through the four ancient Patriarchal sees ( those local churches known to be founded by apostles ), Rome, Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria.

Both sides agree ... that Rome, as the Church that ' presides in love ' according to the phrase of St Ignatius of Antioch ( To the Romans, Prologue ), occupied the first place in the taxis, and that the bishop of Rome was therefore the protos among the patriarchs.

The Apostolic Fathers, discussed the death and resurrection of Jesus, including Ignatius ( 50 − 115 ), Polycarp ( 69 − 155 ), and Justin Martyr ( 100 − 165 ).

They also point out that early Christians such as Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Clement of Rome ( who were much closer to the event than those who have later proposed a figurative interpretation of the Eucharist ), described the Eucharist as truly the body and blood of Christ.

It was not foreseen at Rome in 1540, when the Church officially recognized the young society forming about Ignatius of Loyola, ( founder of the Society of Jesus ), what large results this new organization was destined to achieve ; yet a deliberate and gradual course of action against Protestantism dates from this period.

Retreats are also popular in Christian churches, and were established in today's form by St. Ignatius of Loyola ( 1491-1556 ), in his Spiritual Exercises.

Although the practice of leaving one's everyday life to connect on a deeper level with God, be that in the desert ( as with the Desert Fathers ), or in a monastery, is as old as Christianity itself, the practice of spending a specific time away with God is a more modern phenomenon, dating from the 1520s and St. Ignatius of Loyola's composition of the Spiritual Exercises.

The Retreat was popularised in Roman Catholicism by the Society of Jesus ( Jesuits ), whose founder, St. Ignatius of Loyola, as a layman began, in the 1520s, directing others in making ( participating in ) the exercises.

At least eight bishops are known ( Le Quien, Oriens christianus, I, 1181 ): Athanasius ( 431 ), Peter ( 680 ), Euthymius ( 787 ) and Ignatius ( 869 ); Theodosius ( 1357 ), Joannicius, who became Patriarch of Constantinople ( 1524 ), Philotheus ( 1564 ) and Joasaph ( 1721 ).

Similarly, the defenses of the right belief and worship of the church resided in the bishops, and Protestants theorize that the process of unifying the doctrine of the Church also concentrated power into their own hands ( see also Ignatius of Antioch, who advocated a powerful bishop ), and made their office an instrument of power coveted by ambitious men.

The Petoskey stone and the city were named after Chief Ignatius Petosega ( 1787 – 1885 ), who founded the community.
