The most common reasons for abandoning children in literature are oracles that the child will cause harm ; the mother's desire to conceal her illegitimate child, often after rape by a god ; or spite on the part of people other than the parents, such as sisters and mothers-in-law in such fairy tales as The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird.

In the Grimm fairy tale Foundling-Bird, Foundling Bird never learns of, let alone reunites with, his parents.

Stories with such false quest-objects include the legends of Jason and Perseus, the fairy tales The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird, Go I Know Not Whither and Fetch I Know Not What, and the story of Beren and Lúthien in J. R. R. Tolkien's Silmarillion.

However, most are a fairy godmother as in versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and The Blue Bird.

Madame d ' Aulnoy created a fairy godmother for the evil stepsister in her fairy tale The Blue Bird ; in this position, the fairy godmother's attempts to bring about the marriage of her goddaughter and the hero are evil attempts to impede his marriage with the heroine.

In the eighteenth century, Madame d ' Aulnoy wrote two fairy tales, The Story of Pretty Goldilocks, where the hero was named Avenant (" Fine ", " Beautiful ", in French ), and The Blue Bird, where the hero was Le roi Charmant (" The Charming King ").

The Firebird tales follow the classical scheme of fairy tale, with the feather serving as a premonition of a hard journey, with magical helpers met on the way who help in travel and capture of the Bird, and returning from the faraway land with the prize.

The Firebird concept has parallels in Iranian legends of magical birds, in the Brothers Grimm fairy tale about The Golden Bird, and related Russian magical birds like the Sirin.

In Czech folklore, it is called Pták Ohnivák ( Fire-like Bird ) and appears, for example, in a Karel Jaromír Erben fairy tale, also as an object of a difficult quest.

He also observed that while the distinction between animal tales and tales of the fantastic was basically correct — no one would classify Tsarevitch Ivan, the Fire Bird and the Gray Wolf an animal tale because of the wolf — it did raise questions because animals tales often contained fantastic elements, and tales of the fantastic often contained animals ; indeed a tale could shift categories if a peasant deceived a bear rather than a devil.

A Bird in Your Ear is a one act opera by British / American composer David Bruce based on the Russian folk tale, The Language of the Birds, with a libretto by Alasdair Middleton.
