Built before strict federal Interstate Highway standards were developed during the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration, the expressway was plagued by tight turns, an excessive number of entrances and exits, entrance ramps without merge lanes, and continually escalating vehicular loads.

He was a moderate conservative who continued New Deal agencies, expanded Social Security and launched the Interstate Highway System.

One of Eisenhower's enduring achievements was championing and signing the bill that authorized the Interstate Highway System in 1956.

His subsequent experience with German autobahns during World War II convinced him of the benefits of an Interstate Highway System.

Noticing the improved ability to move logistics throughout the country, he thought an Interstate Highway System in the U. S. would not only be beneficial for military operations, but provide a measure of continued economic growth.

Eisenhower is remembered for his role in World War II, the creation of the Interstate Highway System and ending the Korean War.

The Detroit River International Crossing is a new bridge project expected to be completed in approximately 2013 ; it will directly connect Highway 401 in Canada to Interstate 75 in the U. S.

The railroad town of Allenton is a former community on U. S. Highway 66 located ( now ) at the junction of Interstate 44 and Business Loop 44 in western St. Louis County.

The 1950s saw a boom in franchise chains in conjunction with the development of the U. S. Interstate Highway System.

Today, the village has two exits on I-94, which replaced US 12 as the primary route from Detroit to Chicago when the Interstate Highway System was built.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on Interstate 580 which connects Marin and Contra Costa counties, the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge on Interstate 80 which connects Alameda and San Francisco counties, the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge on Highway 92 which connects Alameda and San Mateo counties and the Dumbarton Bridge on Highway 84 which connects Alameda and San Mateo counties.

The Carquinez Bridge on Interstate 80, the Benicia Bridge on Interstate 680 and the Antioch Bridge on Highway 160 all connect Contra Costa and Solano county.

A number of major thoroughfares run north-south: El Camino Real ( SR 82 ) and US 101 on the east side along the bay, Interstate 280 down the center, Skyline Boulevard ( SR 35 ) along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Highway 1 on the west along the Pacific.

The Interstate Highway System is funded by the federal government but maintained by state governments.

Major roads in the county include small sections of Interstate 5 and Interstate 205, the Sunset Highway, Oregon Route 217, Oregon Route 47, Oregon Route 10, Oregon Route 6, and Oregon Route 8.

In that year, the federal Interstate highway program was established, funding non-toll roads with 90 % federal dollars and 10 % state match, giving little incentive for states to expand their turnpike system.

I-25 stretches from Interstate 10 at Las Cruces, New Mexico, ( approximately north of El Paso, Texas ), to Interstate 90 in Buffalo, Wyoming, ( approximately south of the Montana / Wyoming border ).

Interstate 10 also passes through this section of the county.

* 20px Interstate 10 is the main interstate highway through Swuannee County, running west and east through the panhandle from Alabama to Jacksonville.

1442 also crosses Cow Bayou just north of Orangefield and south of Interstate 10.

I-17's southern terminus lies within Phoenix, at Interstate 10, and its northern terminus is in Flagstaff, at Interstate 40.

Interstate 17 is known as the Black Canyon Freeway from the northern end of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area to its first interchange with Interstate 10 northwest of Downtown Phoenix, which is known as The Stack.

At the curve ( The Durango Curve ) southwest of downtown, between the 19th Avenue and Buckeye Road interchanges, it picks up the designation Maricopa Freeway all the way to the southern terminus at the second Interstate 10 junction.

Following extensive inspections and repairs, Interstate 90 east-and westbound lanes reopened in early January 2007.

A section of I-78 at the airport was built as the Nassau Expressway, later Interstate 878 and now NY 878, though most of the westbound side was never built.

From here, the route passes more commercial establishments as a four-lane road, heading farther from Route 24, before crossing County Route 527.

Here, there are ramps from the local lanes of eastbound Interstate 78 to both directions of Route 124, to the local lanes of westbound Interstate 78 and Route 24 from both directions of Route 124, and to the express lanes of westbound Interstate 78 from westbound Route 124.

The eastern of the route, the Holland Tunnel approach, runs concurrent with Interstate 78 on the one-way pair of 12th Street eastbound and 14th Street westbound.

After the intersection with Palisade Avenue and a westbound entrance from Hoboken Avenue, an upward road from Coles Street and 18th Street in Downtown Jersey City, the upper level of Route 139 merges with the lower level at an interchange with Interstate 78.

The lower and upper levels of Route 139 merge at an interchange with Interstate 78, which has two viaducts along Route 139, the eastbound 12th Street Viaduct and the westbound 14th Street Viaduct.
