The Act of Settlement is an act of the Parliament of England that was passed in 1701 to settle the succession to the English and Irish crowns and thrones on the Electress Sophia of Hanover ( a granddaughter of James I ) and her Protestant heirs.

She surrendered Lleida to James and agreed to hold Urgell in fief from him.

On her death in 1231, James exchanged the Balearic Islands for Urgell with her widower, Peter of Portugal.

The county of Urgell was extinguished and absorbed by the County of Barcelona in 1413, after the revolt of the last count, James II of Urgell, against the king Ferdinand I of Aragon.

Peter was designated to inherit all of his father's title save that of Urgell, which went to his younger brother James.

Antonio de Luna, an Aragonese supporter of Count James II of Urgell, assassinated the archbishop of Zaragoza, García Fernández de Heredía.
