A bitter, and very public, dispute ensued between those, like Edmund Grindal and Richard Cox, who wished to preserve in exile the exact form of worship of the 1552 Prayer Book ; and those, like John Knox the pastor of the congregation, who regarded that book as still partially tainted with compromise.

John Knox took The Form of Prayers with him to Scotland, where it formed the basis of the Scots Book of Common Order.

However, when John Knox returned to Scotland in 1559, he continued to use the Form of Prayer he had created for the English exiles in Geneva, and in 1564, this supplanted the Book of Common Prayer under the title of the Book of Common Order.

Calvinism became the theological system of the majority in Scotland ( see John Knox ), the Netherlands, with men such as William Ames, T J Frelinghuysen and Wilhelmus à Brakel and parts of Germany ( especially those adjacent to the Netherlands ) with the likes of Olevianus and his colleague Zacharias Ursinus.

Pius IV sent the decrees to Mary, Queen of Scots, with a letter dated June 13, 1564, requesting her to publish them in Scotland, but she dared not do it in the face of John Knox and the Reformation.

John Knox, a Lowland Scot, was born sometime between 1505 and 1515 in or near Haddington, the county town of East Lothian.

By his appointment letter of February 1524, John III granted Vasco da Gama the privileged title of " Viceroy ", being only the second Portuguese governor to enjoy that title ( the first was Francisco de Almeida in 1505 ).

The church combines the staggered layered design of the earliest ( 1505 – 08 ) part of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the central tent of the Church of Ascension in Kolomenskoye ( 1530s ), and the cylindric shape of the Church of Beheading of John the Baptist in Dyakovo ( 1547 ), but the origin of these unique buildings is equally debated.

The countship was subsequently held by Louis de Bourbon, the younger son of John and Marie, and by his descendants up to Charles de Bourbon-Montpensier, the famous constable, who became duke of Bourbon by his marriage with his cousin, Suzanne de Bourbon, in 1505.

Born about 1505 or 1506, Petre was one of the sons of John Petre, a farmer and tanner of a family long established at Tor Newton in Torbryan, Devon, by his marriage to Alice Colling, from nearby Woodland.

Anne inherited Auvergne and married John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany in 1505.

The church has a small chained library of 17th century theological works and some notable monumental brass particularly the altar tomb of John Harewell and his wife Anna ( 1505 ).
