# REDIRECT Khunjerab Pass

Khunjerab Pass ( elevation ) is a high mountain pass in the Karakoram Mountains in a strategic position on the northern border of Pakistan's Gilgit – Baltistan region within the region of Kashmir and on the southwest border of the Xinjiang region of China.

The Khunjerab Pass is the highest paved international border crossing in the world and the highest point on the Karakoram Highway.

The Khunjerab Pass is the only motorable pass across the range.

The security offered by the Kushans encouraged travel across the Khunjerab Pass and facilitated the spread of Mahayana Buddhism to China.

# REDIRECT Khunjerab Pass

Except for the Shimshal, Misgar and Chipursan valleys, all the villages of Gojal can be seen from the Karakorum Highway ( KKH ), which crosses Gojal, entering China at the Khunjerab Pass.

It connects China and Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through the Khunjerab Pass, at an altitude of as confirmed by both SRTM and multiple GPS readings.

Finally, the highway meets the Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab Pass.

Next the road turns west to a checkpost and small settlement at Pirali, and then the Khunjerab Pass, beyond which is Pakistan, the Khunjerab River and Hunza.

This pass is valid for a calendar year and is used to travel through Khunjerab Pass only.

The border crossing between China and Pakistan at Khunjerab Pass is open only between May 1 and December 31 of every year.

However, the border crossing between China and Pakistan at Khunjerab Pass ( the highest border of the world ) is open only between May 1 and October 15 of every year.

There is no link with China however, on February 28, 2007 contracts were awarded for feasibility studies on a proposed line from Havelian via the Khunjerab Pass at 4730 m above sea level, to the Chinese railhead at Kashgar, a distance of about 750 km.

The Tashkurgan River begins just north of the Khunjerab Pass and flows north along the Karakoram Highway to Tashkurgan.

Accommodation is available and it is a recommended overnight stop for road travellers from China to Pakistan in order to have the best chance of crossing the snow-prone Khunjerab Pass in daylight.

Travelling from China, it is about south of Kashgar and is the last town before the border with Pakistan, and over the Khunjerab Pass from Sust, which is the Pakistani border crossing town.

Once more the chain bends to the north-west, rising in several lofty peaks ( the highest is the Aiguille de la Grande Sassière, 3, 751 m ), before attaining the considerable depression of the Little St Bernard Pass.

From the Maloja Pass the main watershed dips to the south-east for a short distance, and then runs eastwards and nearly over the highest summit of the Bernina Range, Piz Bernina ( 4, 049 m ), to the Bernina Pass.

Eastward of this pass, the main chain runs north-east to the Brenner Pass along the snowy crest of the Ötztal and Stubai Alps, the loftiest point on it being the Weißkugel ( 3, 739 m, Ötztal ), for the highest summits both of the Ötztal and of the Stubai districts, the Wildspitze ( 3, 774 m ) and the Zuckerhütl ( 3, 505 m ) stand a little to the north.

With an elevation of 2, 500-3, 500 feet above sea level, Cherry Valley is at the highest point on the San Gorgonio Pass between San Bernardino, CA and Palm Springs, CA.

The highest elevation of the road was Mullan Pass at 5168 feet ( 1575 m ), which is about east of the city on the Idaho-Montana border.

Livingston was also headquarters for the NPR's Central Division and a good location for railroad shops to service NPR steam trains before their ascent over the Bozeman Pass, the highest point on the line.
