In 1993 American feminist artist Kiki Smith created a beeswax life-size sculpture titled " Mother / Child " which included a depiction of man performing autofellatio.

During the 1980s the East Village art gallery scene helped to galvanize a new post-modern art in America ; showing such artists as Kiki Smith, Peter Halley, Keith Haring, Stephen Lack, Greer Lankton, Joseph Nechvatal, Nan Goldin, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Wojnarowicz, James Romberger and Jeff Koons.

In the early 1980s Ludlow Street was well known as a street where no wave Colab artists connected with ABC No Rio lived ; such as Kiki Smith.
