In the other version of the story, Eiríks saga rauða or the Saga of Erik the Red, Leif Ericsson accidentally discovers the new land when travelling from Norway back to Greenland after a visit to his overlord, King Olaf Tryggvason, who commissions him to spread Christianity in the colony.

* Poul Anderson's novel The Mother of the Kings is mainly concerned with the Norwegian King Erik Bloodaxe and his family, but a section takes place in Denmark, with a depiction of the young and ambitious Harald Bluetooth ruthlessly playing off various factions and Viking leaders against each other.

Gustav and his father Erik supported the party of Sten Sture the Younger, regent of Sweden from 1512, and its struggle against the Danish King Christian II.

On the death of King Valdemar II in 1241, a dispute arose over the succession, which led to the island being raided by Lubeckers who took the part of one of the claimants, Knud Duke of Blekinge who was imprisoned by his brother Erik Plovpenning ( king 1241-1250 ) in Stegeborg.

The Northumbrian submission to Eadred led to a meeting with the notables of York led by Archbishop Wulfstan in 947, but the following year King Erik was back ruling Northumbria and Eadred laid waste to the southern parts of the kingdom — Ripon is mentioned as a particular target — to force the Northumbrians to expel Erik, which they did.

Again, whether this was aimed against Amlaíb, who was deposed in 952 and replaced by Erik, or was mounted against King Erik in support of Amlaíb, is unclear.

Eric of Pomerania KG ( 1381 or 1382 – 3 May 1459 ) was King Eric ( Eirik ) III of Norway ( 1389 – 1442 ), King Eric VII of Denmark ( 1396 – 1439 ), and King Eric ( Ericus ) of Sweden ( 1396 – 1439 ; known there in history mainly as Erik av Pommern ).

In 1650 the Minuet, originally a peasant dance of Poitou, was introduced into Paris and set to music by Jean-Baptiste Lully and danced by the King Louis XIV in public, and would continue to dominate ballroom from that time until the close of the 18th century.

For the Grand Alliance – Austria, England, and the Dutch Republic – the battle had followed an indecisive campaign against the Bourbon armies of King Louis XIV of France in 1705.

At the request of the Huguenots at Metz, he pleaded its cause at the court of King Louis XIV, urging that it should be excepted in the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, but his efforts were unsuccessful, and he joined his father in Berlin.

At Versailles she was incorporated into the Olympian iconography with which Louis XIV, the Apollo-like " Sun King " liked to surround himself.

Born in Paris, Eugene grew up around the French court of King Louis XIV.

Now 19 years old, Eugene applied directly to Louis XIV for command of a company in French service, but the King – who had shown no compassion for Olympia's children since her disgrace – refused him out of hand.

They were a Huguenot ( French Protestant ) family who fled to New York about 1687 to avoid the religious persecutions of King Louis XIV.

In 1664 King Louis XIV bought out the independent island owners and established the French West India Company.

King Louis XIV of France eventually " won " the War of Spanish Succession, and control of Spain passed to the Bourbon dynasty.

In 1665, French colonization of the island was officially recognized by King Louis XIV.

Louis XIV, known as the " Sun King ", reigned over France from 1643 until 1715 although his strongest period of personal rule did not begin until 1661 after the death of his Italian chief minister Cardinal Mazarin.

The works are displayed on the Richelieu Wing's first floor and in the Apollo Gallery, named by the painter Charles Le Brun, who was commissioned by Louis XIV ( the Sun King ) to decorate the space in a solar theme.

Exemplifying the French School are the early Avignon Pietà of Enguerrand Quarton ; the anonymous painting of King Jean le Bon ( c. 1360 ), possibly the oldest independent portrait in Western painting to survive from the postclassical era ; Hyacinthe Rigaud's Louis XIV ; Jacques-Louis David's The Coronation of Napoleon ; and Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People.

Louisiana was named after Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 – 1715.

She was further dismayed when James refused to help when the Catholic King of France, Louis XIV, invaded Orange and persecuted Huguenot refugees there.
