The film tells the story of Otto and Ana, from their chance meeting outside school at the age of 8, until they meet again in their 20s in Lapland within the Arctic Circle, under the midnight sun.

Their second film was the 1997 Kummeli: Kultakuume ( Gold Rush ) which told the story of a motley crew of characters travelling to Lapland to collect a gold treasure hidden by the main protagonist's father during the war.

An alternative interpretation, made by the Portuguese philosopher Damião de Góis in 1540, derives Lapland from " the dumb and lazy land ", because a land where no vegetables grow is lazy and does not speak.
