Unfortunately, she was sent there by mistake — her sponsors, the siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, wanted to adopt a boy to help them on their farm, but the neighbour with whom they had sent the message was certain they had requested a girl instead.

Anne and Gilbert have seven children: Joyce ( or " Joy ") ( who dies very soon after her birth ), James Matthew (" Jem "), Walter Cuthbert, Diana (" Di "), Diana's twin Anne (" Nan "), Shirley ( the youngest son ), and Bertha Marilla (" Rilla ").

The film resumes the story of Anne Shirley, who at 16 had chosen to study for her college degree by correspondence in order to remain at Green Gables to help an aging Marilla, who has eyesight problems, look after the house and farm.

Having regained her independence, Marilla encourages Anne to resume her old ambition of attending college.

Both Anne and Marilla are relieved ( Marilla inwardly of course ) to know the twins will remain with her.

Gilbert aspires to become a doctor and goes on to study at Redmond College, where he is joined by Anne, freed of personal obligations after the widowed Rachel Lynde moves to Green Gables to keep Marilla company, in Anne of the Island.

In 1985, he appeared in the Canadian miniseries Anne of Green Gables, winning a Gemini Award for his performance as Matthew Cuthbert.
