Mehmet Ali Ağca (; born January 9, 1958 ) is a Turkish assassin who murdered left-wing journalist Abdi İpekçi on February 1, 1979 and later shot and wounded Pope John Paul II on May 13, 1981, after escaping from a Turkish prison.

After the May 13, 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II by Mehmet Ali Ağca, a much stronger emphasis has been placed on the Swiss Guards ' functional, non-ceremonial roles.

Under the ministers Beqir Balluku, Mehmet Shehu and Kadri Hasbiu he held this post until October 1982 ( Prime Minister Shehu died violently in December 1981 ).

Mehmet Ismail Shehu ( January 10, 1913 – December 17, 1981 ) was an Albanian communist politician who served as premier of Albania from 1954 to 1981.

According to official Albanian government sources, he committed suicide on December 17, 1981, after which the entire Shehu clan ( his wife, sons and other of his relatives ) were arrested and imprisoned while Mehmet Shehu himself was denounced as " one of the most dangerous traitors and enemies of his country ".

* June 9 – Two men hijack Air Malta Flight KM 830, a Boeing 737-2Y5Adv with 78 other people on board flying from Malta to Istanbul, Turkey, and order the plane to divert to Cologne, Germany, where they demand the release of Mehmet Ali Ağca, who is serving a life sentence in Italy for trying to assassinate Pope John Paul II in 1981.

It was during this time in Italy that Ledeen supported the " Bulgarian connection " conspiracy theory concerning Grey Wolves member Mehmet Ali Ağca's 1981 attempt to assassinate Pope John Paul II.

Bruguière counselled Italian senator Paolo Guzzanti ( Forza Italia ), in charge of the Mitrokhin Commission, endorsing the old thesis, once supported by the CIA, according to which the Soviet Union was behind Mehmet Ali Agca's 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.

In a draft report, senator Guzzanti revived the " Bulgarian connection " theory concerning Mehmet Ali Agca's 1981 assassination attempt against the Pope John Paul II.

In November 2010, Mehmet Ali Ağca asserted that Casaroli had been the man behind the assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981.

Mehmet Barış Manço ( also spelled Boris Mancho in some European album releases ), born Tosun Yusuf Mehmet Barış Manço, ( January 2, 1943-February 1, 1999 ) was a Turkish rock singer, composer, and television producer.
