* 1923 – Lithuanian residents of the Memel Territory rebel against the League of Nations decision to leave the area as a mandated region under French control.

The divestiture of Germany's overseas colonies, along with three territories disentangled from its European homeland area ( the Free City of Danzig, Memel Territory, and Saar ), was accomplished in the Treaty of Versailles ( 1919 ), with the territories being allotted among the Allies on May 7 of that year.

This border, as established by the treaty, remained stable for some 500 years until the Memel Territory dispute of 1923.

The Klaipėda Region () or Memel Territory () was defined by the Treaty of Versailles in 1920 when it was put under the administration of the Council of Ambassadors.

Notable losses included the Polish Corridor, Danzig, the Memel Territory ( to Lithuania ), the Province of Posen, the French province of Alsace-Lorraine, and the most economically valuable eastern portion of Upper Silesia.

The part north of the Neman River up to Memel was separated from Germany by the Treaty of Versailles in 1920, and was called the Memel Territory.

Reunion of the Memel Territory with Germany was met with joy by a majority of Prussian Lithuanians.
