A seventh landing mission, the 1970 Apollo 13 flight, failed in transit to the Moon when an oxygen tank explosion disabled the command spacecraft's propulsion and life support, forcing the crew to use the Lunar Module as a " lifeboat " for these functions to return to Earth safely.

On the surface, Young and Duke collected of lunar samples for return to Earth, while Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly orbited in the Command / Service Module above to perform observations.

Six minutes after the successful burn of the S-IVB, the Command / Service Module, containing the crew, separated from the rocket and traveled for before turning around and retrieving the Lunar Module from inside the expended rocket stage.

Later in the day, the astronauts entered the Lunar Module for the second time in the mission to further inspect the landing craft's systems.

During the second half of the day, John Young and Charlie Duke again entered the Lunar Module to power it up and check its systems, as well as perform housekeeping tasks in preparation for lunar landing.

The remainder of flight day four was spent making observations and preparing for activation of the Lunar Module, undocking, and landing the next day.

Young, Mattingly and Duke continued preparing for Lunar Module ( LM ) activation and undocking shortly after waking up to begin flight day five.

After preparations for the day's moonwalk were completed, the astronauts climbed out of the Lunar Module.

Flight day seven was to be Young's and Duke's third and final day on the lunar surface, for they would return to orbit to rejoin Ken Mattingly in the Command / Service Module following the day's moonwalk.

Its two major components, the Saturn Workshop and the Apollo Telescope Mount, began their development as separate projects ( the SWS was kludged from the S-IVB stage of the Saturn 1B and Saturn V launch vehicles, the ATM was kludged from an early design for the descent stage of the Apollo Lunar Module ).

In the final design, the SWS and ATM were launched together, but for the single-launch concept to work, the ATM had to pivot 90 degrees on a truss structure from its launch position to its on-orbit orientation, clearing the way for the crew to dock its Apollo Command / Service Module at the axial docking port of the Multiple Docking Adapter.

The Airlock Module's manufacturer, McDonnell Douglas, even recycled the hatch design from its Gemini spacecraft and kludged what was originally designed for the conical Gemini Command Module onto the cylindrical Skylab Airlock Module.

In early planning for the Apollo Program, it had been assumed that two Saturn V launch vehicles would be used for each lunar mission: one for sending the crew aboard a Lunar Surface Module ( LSM ) to lunar orbit, landing, and returning, and a second for sending an LSM-Truck ( LSM-T ) with all of the equipment, supplies, and transport vehicle for use by the crew while on the surface.

It would then be necessary for any roving vehicle to be carried on the same Lunar Module as transporting the astronauts.
