* December 7 – after a fiercely contested campaign, Monier Williams is elected as the new Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University.

It finds earliest mention in the Atharva Veda ( 1000 BC ), vi 97, 1, ( source Monier Williams ) though pouring into the ritual fire was known as early as in the ( c. 1400 BC ) and it the closely related Zoroastrian religion ( Yasna Haptaŋhāiti ).

According to the Monier Williams Sanskrit – English Dictionary ( 1899 ), Surabhi means fragrant, charming, pleasing, as well as cow and earth.

Monier Williams was born in Bombay, the son of Colonel Monier Williams, surveyor-general in the Bombay presidency.

Jamaican pediatrician Dr. Cicely Williams introduced the name into the medical community in her 1935 Lancet article.
