Optical isomerism occurs when a molecule is not superposable with its mirror image.

Optical and electron microscopy involve the diffraction, reflection, or refraction of electromagnetic radiation / electron beams interacting with the specimen, and the subsequent collection of this scattered radiation or another signal in order to create an image.

* Optical character recognition ( OCR ): Given an image representing printed text, determine the corresponding text.

Optical systems utilize data captured from image sensors to triangulate the 3D position of a subject between one or more cameras calibrated to provide overlapping projections.

These include ( but are not limited to ) Beam Position Monitors ( BPMs ) to measure the position of the bunch, screens ( fluorescent screens, Optical Transition Radiation ( OTR ) devices ) to image the profile of the bunch, wire-scanners to measure its cross-section, and toroids or ICTs to measure the bunch charge ( i. e. the number of particles per bunch ).

Finally, a probably more efficient solution has been proposed by Google and is used by its Gmail email system, performing an OCR ( Optical Character Recognition ) to every mid to large size image, analyzing the text inside.

Optical cards were produced by Landis + Gyr and Sodeco from Switzerland and were popular early phonecards in many countries with first optical phonecards successfully introduced in 1977 in Belgium.
