His best-known work is the symphony Osiris.

During his final school years he began writing his poetry in notebooks, the first poem dated 27 April ( 1930 ), is entitled " Osiris, come to Isis ".

Finally, several planets have received unofficial " real " names: notably Osiris ( HD 209458 b ), Bellerophon ( 51 Pegasi b ), Zarmina ( Gliese 581 g ) and Methuselah ( PSR B1620-26 b ).

Over the course of the Old Kingdom ( c. 2686 – 2181 BC ), however, he came to be more closely associated with the daily rebirth of the sun god Ra and with the underworld ruler Osiris as those deities grew more important.

Ptah-Seker ( who resulted from the identification of Ptah as Seker ), who was god of re-incarnation, thus gradually became identified with Osiris, the two becoming Ptah-Seker-Osiris.

Plutarch recounts one version of the myth in which Set ( Osiris ' brother ), along with the Queen of Ethiopia, conspired with 72 accomplices to plot the assassination of Osiris.

In contrast he argues that the ancient story of dying and rising in the divine, human and crops, ( with Osiris as an example ), is vindicated and reaches a conclusion in Christianity.

Much of the extant information about the Passion of Osiris can be found on the Ikhernofret Stela at Abydos erected in the 12th Dynasty by Ikhernofret ( also I-Kher-Nefert ), possibly a priest of Osiris or other official ( the titles of Ikhernofret are described in his stela from Abydos ) during the reign of Senwosret III ( Pharaoh Sesostris, about 1875 BC ).

In Egyptian mythology, in the Ennead system of Heliopolis, the first couple, apart from Shu and Tefnut ( moisture and dryness ) and Geb and Nuit ( earth and sky ), are Isis and Osiris.

The process by which a ka became an akh was not automatic upon death ; it involved a 70-day journey through the duat, or Otherworld, which led to judgment before Wesir ( Gr. Osiris ), Lord of the Dead where the ka ’ s heart would be weighed on a scale against the Feather of Ma ’ at ( representing Truth ).

The tale describes both why Anubis is seen as an underworld deity ( he becomes a son of Osiris ), and why he could not inherit Osiris's position ( he was not a legitimate heir in this new birth scenario ), neatly preserving Osiris's position as lord of the underworld.

By the early Middle Kingdom ( c. 2055 – 1650 BC ), non-royal Egyptians believed that they, too, could overcome death as Osiris had, by worshipping him and receiving the funerary rites that were partly based on his myth.

By Ptolemaic times ( 305 – 30 BC ), Khoiak also included the planting of seeds in an " Osiris bed ", a mummy-shaped bed of soil, connecting the resurrection of Osiris with the seasonal growth of plants.

During these 5 days, Nut gave birth to Kheru-ur ( Horus the Elder, Face of Heaven ), Osiris, Set, Isis, and Nepthys.

With these associations she can be construed as being a divine arbiter of the goddess Ma ' at ( Justice, or Order ) in the Judgment Hall of Osiris, associating her with the Wedjat ( later the Eye of Ra ), and connecting her with Tefnut as well.

As both an underworld deity, and subservient to Osiris, Aken became known as Cherti ( also spelt Kherty ), meaning ( one who is ) subservient.

It was named Aser-hapi ( i. e. Osiris-Apis ), which became Serapis, and was said to be Osiris in full, rather than just his Ka.

With his ( i. e., Osiris ') wife, Isis, and their son ( at this point in history ) Horus ( in the form of Harpocrates ), Serapis won an important place in the Greek world, reaching Ancient Rome, with Anubis being identified as Cerberus.

In particular, it was the Ba of Osiris, known as Banebjed ( literally meaning Ba of the lord of the djed, referring to Osiris ), which was said to have married Hatmehit.

When Horus became considered the son of Osiris, a form known as Harpocrates ( Har-pa-khered in Egyptian ), Hatmehit was consequently said to be his mother.

At this time, Anubis was the most important god of the dead but he was replaced during the Middle Kingdom by Osiris.

In this manner, he was a Lord of the Underworld, only usurped by Osiris.

Indeed, when the Myth of Osiris and Isis emerged, it was said that when Osiris had been killed by Set, Osiris ' organs were given to Anubis as a gift.

Dualism was first seen implicitly in Egyptian Religious beliefs by the contrast of the Gods Set ( disorder, death ) and Osiris ( order, life ).

* 2001 – A hydrogen atmosphere is discovered on the extrasolar planet Osiris by the Hubble Space Telescope, the first atmosphere detected on an extrasolar planet.

The myth described Osiris as having been killed by his brother Set, who wanted Osiris ' throne.

Isis briefly brought Osiris back to life by use of a spell that she learned from her father.

This spell gave her time to become pregnant by Osiris before he again died.

The gods were impressed by the devotion of Isis and resurrected Osiris as the god of the underworld.

Osiris was then murdered by his evil brother Typhon, who was identified with Set.

The first phase of the festival was a public drama depicting the murder and dismemberment of Osiris, the search of his body by Isis, his triumphal return as the resurrected god, and the battle in which Horus defeated Set.

In the Osirian temple at Denderah, an inscription ( translated by Budge, Chapter XV, Osiris and the Egyptian Resurrection ) describes in detail the making of wheat paste models of each dismembered piece of Osiris to be sent out to the town where each piece is discovered by Isis.

Next, the triumphant Henefer, having passed the test, is presented by the falcon-headed Horus to Osiris, seated in his shrine with Isis and Nephthys.

Thus Osiris was identified explicitly with Apis, really an aspect of Ptah, who had already been identified as Osiris by this point, and a syncretism of the two was created, known as Serapis, and depicted as a standard Greek god.

The worship of Isis and Osiris was allowed to continue at Philae until the time of Justinian, by treaty between the Blemmyes-Nobadae and Diocletian.

The continental, or realist, tradition focused on humans within human-made environments, and included the so-called " city symphony " films such as Walter Ruttmann's Berlin, Symphony of a City ( of which Grierson noted in an article that Berlin represented what a documentary should not be ), Alberto Cavalcanti's Rien que les heures, and Dziga Vertov's Man with the Movie Camera.

A German Requiem was partially inspired by his mother's death in 1865 ( at which time he composed a funeral march that was to become the basis of Part Two, Denn alles Fleisch ), but it also incorporates material from a symphony which he started in 1854 but abandoned following Schumann's suicide attempt.

From 1964, the Merry Pranksters, a loose group that developed around novelist Ken Kesey, sponsored the Acid Tests, a series of events based around the taking of LSD ( supplied by Stanley ), accompanied by light shows, film projection and discordant, improvised music known as the psychedelic symphony.

Otto Kitzler, Bruckner's last composition teacher, set him three final tasks as the climax of his studies: a choral work ( Psalm 112 ), an overture ( the Overture in G minor ), and a symphony.

During the time that Bruckner began work on this symphony, he was aware that Wagner's death was imminent, and so the Adagio is slow mournful music for Wagner ( the climax of the movement comes at rehearsal letter W ), and for the first time in Bruckner's oeuvre, Wagner tubas are included in the orchestra.

However, there are recordings with substantial low frequency content that most conventional loudspeakers are ill-equipped to handle without the help of a subwoofer, especially at high playback levels, such as music for pipe organs with 32 ' bass pipes ( 16 Hz ), very large bass drums on symphony orchestra recordings and electronic music with extremely low synth bass parts, such as bass tests or bass songs.

In addition to the Symphonie fantastique, some other orchestral works of Berlioz currently in the standard orchestral repertoire include his " légende dramatique " La damnation de Faust and " symphonie dramatique " Roméo et Juliette ( both large-scale works for mixed voices and orchestra ), and his concertante symphony ( for viola and orchestra ) Harold en Italie, several concert overtures also remain enduringly popular, such as Le Corsaire and Le Carnaval romain.

At that point, Whistler painted another self-portrait and entitled it Arrangement in Gray: Portrait of the Painter ( c. 1872 ), and he also began to re-title many of his earlier works using terms associated with music, such as a " nocturne ", " symphony ", " harmony ", " study " or " arrangement ", to emphasize the tonal qualities and the composition and to de-emphasize the narrative content.

The symphony was followed by another orchestral work, by far the best known of Dukas's compositions, his scherzo for orchestra, L ' apprenti sorcier ( The Sorcerer's Apprentice ) ( 1897 ), a short piece ( lasting for between 10 and 12 minutes in performance ) based on Goethe's poem " Der Zauberlehrling ".

Hindemith turned some of the music from this opera into a purely instrumental symphony ( also called Mathis der Maler ), which is one of his most frequently performed works.

* Emilius Bangert ( 1883 – 1962 ), who assisted Nielsen in notating and transcribing a number of his compositions, wrote a symphony, overture, string quartet, sonatas, choral works and songs.

* Nancy Dalberg ( 1881 – 1949 ), who was the first Danish woman to compose a symphony, helped Nielsen with orchestration and notation work, especially in connection with Fynsk Foraar.

He also wrote several cantatas ( including Mazeppa in 1862 ), at least one symphony ( 1829 ).

Recordings for which he is particularly well known include Edward Elgar's Overture In the South ( Alassio ), and Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony.

While many symphonic poems may compare in size and scale to symphonic movements ( or even reach the length of an entire symphony ), they are unlike traditional classical symphonic movements, in that their music is intended to inspire listeners to imagine or consider scenes, images, specific ideas or moods, and not to focus on following traditional patterns of musical form ( e. g. sonata form ).

Other Martin pieces include a full-scale symphony ( 1936 – 1937 ), two piano concertos, a harpsichord concerto, a violin concerto, a cello concerto, a concerto for seven wind instruments, and a series of six one-movement works he called " ballades " for various solo instruments with piano or orchestra.

The London Symphony Orchestra ( LSO ), founded in 1904, is the oldest of London's symphony orchestras.

As well as his many film scores, Herrmann wrote several concert pieces, including a symphony in 1941 ; the opera Wuthering Heights ; the cantata Moby Dick ( 1938 ), dedicated to Charles Ives ; and For the Fallen, a tribute to the soldiers who died in battle in World War II, among others.

Only his violin concerto has ever been performed with anything approaching regularity, though he also wrote Idillio-concertino ( essentially a chamber symphony ), various pieces of chamber music including a piano quintet and two piano trio, two violin sonatas and a number of works for the organ amongst others.

In his earlier works, Beethoven was a Classicist in the traditions of Mozart and Haydn ( his tutor ), but his Middle Period, beginning with his third symphony ( the ' Eroica '), bridges the worlds of Classical and Romantic music.

Founded in 1765, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra ( Norway's oldest symphony orchestra ), which Grieg once used to conduct, is together with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, established in 1919, the leading orchestras in Norway.
