In 1381 Richard II of England despatched a powerful force to Lisbon, and betrothed his cousin Prince Edward to Beatrice, only child of Ferdinand, who had been recognized as heiress to the throne by the Cortes of Leiria ( 1376 ).

Since the passage of the Act of Settlement, the most senior member of the Royal Family to have married a Roman Catholic, and thereby been removed from the line and later lines of succession, is Prince Michael of Kent, who married Baroness Marie-Christine von Reibnitz in 1978 ; he was fifteenth in the lines of succession at the time of his marriage.

Prince Eugene of Savoy ( French: François-Eugène de Savoie, German: Eugen von Savoyen, Italian: Principe Eugenio di Savoia-Carignano ; 18 October 1663 – 21 April 1736 ), was one of the most successful military commanders in modern European history, rising to the highest offices of state at the Imperial court in Vienna.

After the abdication of Napoleon following the War of the Sixth Coalition, Austria participated as a leading member of the Holy Alliance at the Congress of Vienna, which was largely dominated by Francis's chancellor Klemens Wenzel, Prince von Metternich culminating in a new European map and the restoration of Francis ' ancient dominions ( except the Holy Roman Empire which was dissolved ).

Rising tensions in 1869 about the possible candidacy of Prince Leopold von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to the throne of Spain caused a rise in the scale of animosity between France and Germany.

Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince of Bismarck, Duke of Lauenburg ( 1 April 1815 – 30 July 1898 ), simply known as Otto von Bismarck, was a conservative German statesman who dominated European affairs from the 1860s to his dismissal in 1890.

In 1871, Otto von Bismarck was raised to the rank of Fürst ( Prince ).

In 1871, he was further created Fürst von Bismarck (" Prince of Bismarck ") and accorded the style of Durchlaucht ( equivalent to " Serene Highness "); this princely title descended only to his eldest male heirs.
