On the other hand, the largely self-contained Merseyrail system is part of the National Rail network, and urban rail networks around Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow and West Yorkshire consist entirely of National Rail services.

In 1846 the L & BR merged with the Grand Junction Railway and the Manchester and Birmingham Railway to form the London and North Western Railway, which in turn was later absorbed into the London Midland and Scottish Railway, before finally passing into the hands of the nationalised British Rail in 1948 to become part of the West Coast Main Line as it is known today.

The tower is on a long lease and administered by Birmingham City Council, but Network Rail owns the freehold.

Virgin Trains won the franchises for the former Intercity West Coast and Cross-Country sectors of British Rail.

Pennsylvania broad gauge was used on the former ( defunct ) Pittsburgh Railways and the defunct West Penn Railways () and is still used on the current Pittsburgh Light Rail, on some SEPTA lines such as the Philadelphia streetcar lines and the Philadelphia Market-Frankford subway line ( & ) as well as in New Orleans ().

The main alleged reason for this decision was that many workers in Canary Wharf lived in Essex and could change from National Rail to the Jubilee Line at Stratford, London and West Ham.
