According to Richard Pankhurst, C. frutescens ( known as barbaré ) was so important to the national cuisine of Ethiopia, at least as early as the 19th century, " that it was cultivated extensively in the warmer areas wherever the soil was suitable.

In 1878 she married Richard Pankhurst, a barrister 24 years her senior known for supporting women's right to vote ; they had five children over the next ten years.

Suffragist Lydia Becker was an early political influence on Pankhurst and may have been enamoured of Richard Pankhurst.

Richard Pankhurst first caught Emmeline Goulden's eye when she spied his " beautiful hand " opening the door of a cab as he arrived at a public meeting in 1878.

In the autumn of 1878, at the age of 20, Emmeline Goulden met and began a courtship with Richard Pankhurst, a barrister who had advocated women's suffrage – and other causes, including freedom of speech and education reform – for years.
