Robin Lane Fox states " By the early fifth century, we know of the ownership of private icons of saints ; by c. 480-500, we can be sure that the inside of a saint's shrine would be adorned with images and votive portraits, a practice which had probably begun earlier ".

The first allusion to a literary tradition of Robin Hood tales occurs in William Langland's Piers Plowman ( c. 1362 – c.

However, it is uncontroversial that a Robin and Marion figured in 13th-century French " pastourelles " ( of which Jeu de Robin et Marion c. 1280 is a literary version ) and presided over the French May festivities, " this Robin and Marion tended to preside, in the intervals of the attempted seduction of the latter by a series of knights, over a variety of rustic pastimes.

From time to time the player may attempt to rescue a damsel in distress and can appeal for help from the legendary bandit Robin Hood.
