In January 1986, the 7800 was again released and would compete that year with the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Master System.

The software libraries of the Atari 7800 and Sega Master System suffered tremendously as a result.

While the 320 pixel modes theoretically enable the 7800 to create games at higher resolution than the 256 pixel wide graphics found in the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System, the intense processing demands of MARIA typically meant that programmers created their games using the lower 160 pixel modes.

Unlike the NES or Sega Master System, there were few add-on peripherals for the 7800, though its backwards compatibility feature allowed it to be compatible with most Atari 2600 peripherals.

The control pads have screw holes in their centers, so that one could transform them into a joystick, as with the later Sega Master System's controller.

Ports of the game were released for the Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Atari ST, MSX, Amstrad CPC, Sharp X68000, PC ( MS-DOS, 1989 and 1996 ), Apple II, FM Towns Marty, Sega Master System, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo Entertainment System, Famicom Disk System, Sega Game Gear, mobile phone ( Sprint PCS ), Texas Instruments TI-8x series of calculators and UltraCade's Taito Arcade Classics.

The original Sega Master System version had two hundred levels.

Sega converted Bubble Bobble for the Master System ( although this version was not released in North America ).

ColecoVision shares the same CPU and a sound chip with Sega Master System, also a similar but inferior graphics chip.

Joysticks were commonly used as controllers in first and second generation game consoles, but they gave way to the familiar game pad with the Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Master System during the mid-1980s, though joysticks — especially arcade-style one — were and are popular after-market add-ons for any console.

A Sega Master System version became available for Japan on May 19, 2009, for North America on November 2, 2009 and for Europe on September 25, 2009, however due to licensing issues, this version has been delisted on September 30, 2011 in North America and Europe and October 18, 2011 in Japan.

The Game Gear was invented by Makoto Ohara of Sega Enterprises Ltd. as a portable version of the Master System ( SMS ).

By 1993 the 32-bit 3DO platform was released with much developer interest and Sega and Sony let it be known that the Sega Saturn and PlayStation would be ready for the Japanese marketplace in late 1994, and Bandai was also readying the release of their Playdia system.

Sega released Eternal Champions for their Mega Drive / Genesis in 1993, hoping to capitalize on the fighting game mania that the game industry was in the midst of following the massive success of Street Fighter II ( 1991 ) and Mortal Kombat ( 1992 ).

Sega's 1986 video game Out Run is a good example of this technique, though it was predated by the 1982 Namco game Pole Position, while the first contenders date back to mid-1970s: Interceptor released by Taito in 1975, and Moto-Cross ( re-branded as Fonz that same year ) and Road Race released by Sega in 1976.
