Mathias wrote his Sinfonietta – initially called Dance Suite – for the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra in late 1966, and it received its first performance at Leicester De Montfort Hall during the 1967 Schools Festival.

The LSSO made the first commercial recording of Sinfonietta for the Pye Golden Guinea label in July 1967 under the direction of the composer ( see external links below ).

Tubin was influenced by Estonian folk music in his earlier works, including a Sinfonietta on Estonian motifs.

His three black moons ( 1999 ), commissioned by the London Sinfonietta, was described by The Guardian, '... the most striking piece takes its title from an Alexander Calder mobile-its magical floating sonorities had a Feldmanesque beauty.

In 2009, singer Antony Hegarty, lead singer of Antony and the Johnsons recorded the aria with the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra, which was released for free by the Italian coffee company, Lavazza.

The 24-minute instrumental work was performed by the London Sinfonietta with solo cellist Philip Sheppard as music to a performance by London-based CandoCo Dance Company.

Between 1985 and 1994 he completed six major works for ensemble: Suns Dance for the London Sinfonietta ( 1985, reworked for the Royal Ballet as Pursuit ), Two Part Invention ( 1987 ), The Great Journey ( 1981 – 88 ) — re-released on NMC — Contraflow, commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for the 1992 Huddersfield Festival, and two commissions for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Hidden Variables ( 1989 ) and ... through the glass ( 1994 ), the latter given its first performance under Simon Rattle, who also conducted it in 1998 at the Proms and in Salzburg.

The year 2000 saw four major premières: Two Tributes for the London Sinfonietta ; Pluto, an addition to Holst's Planets, for the Hallé Orchestra and Kent Nagano, already widely performed ; Aftertones, for the Huddersfield Choral Society ; and Continuum, a large-scale work for soprano and ensemble commissioned by the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group for Cynthia Clarey and Simon Rattle, with performances in London, Cologne, Brussels, Amsterdam, Vienna and Birmingham.

Poulenc's output continued, including chansons accompanied on the piano, choral music, secular ( Huit chansons françaises, 1945 ) and religious ( Stabat Mater, 1950 ) works, orchestral pieces ( Sinfonietta, 1947 ), chamber music ( particularly for wind instruments ), works for one or two pianos such as L ' embarquement pour Cythère, a valse musette ( 1951 ).

Graham Waterhouse composed several works for string orchestra ( Sinfonietta ), also in combination with contrasting sounds as Great Highland Bagpipe ( Chieftain's Salute ).

An additional source of confusion is the fact that the instruments are invariably designated in orchestral scores simply as " tubas ", leaving it sometimes unclear as to whether true tubas or Wagner tubas are intended ( for example, the two tenor tubas in Janáček's Sinfonietta are sometimes wrongly assumed to be Wagner tubas when they are euphoniums ).

Though he first received favourable critical attention for his chamber music and continued to compose significant works in this genre, his greatest achievements in general are to be found among his few large-scale orchestral works, including a Violin Concerto, Cello Concerto, Sinfonietta and Serenade.

It was performed with the London Sinfonietta and Arab Orchestra of Nazareth at the Ether Festival in March 2005 ; the song would later be adapted for the full band to play in 2006, rearranged for guitar.
