Born in 1809 in Liverpool, England, at 62 Rodney Street, William Ewart Gladstone was the fourth son of the merchant Sir John Gladstone from Leith ( now a suburb of Edinburgh ), and his second wife, Anne MacKenzie Robertson, from Dingwall, Ross-shire.

* January 16 – American Revolutionary War – Battle of Cape St. Vincent: British Admiral Sir George Rodney defeats a Spanish fleet.

Believing that de Grasse would return a portion of his fleet to Europe, Rodney detached Rear Admiral Sir Samuel Hood with 14 ships of the line and orders to find de Grasse's destination in North America.

Three years later he began a close association with Sir George Rodney.

In January of the following year he was sent to the West Indies with a strong squadron and was there opposed to Sir George Rodney.

His good service led to his promotion to lieutenant on 17 March 1762 by Sir George Rodney, and Phipps went on to serve in the battle of Havana.

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett, CBE ( born 29 March 1936 ) is an English composer renowned for his film scores and his jazz performance as much as for his challenging concert works.
