St Thomas Aquinas in the Summa Theologica, II: II Quaestio 25, Article 4 states that we should love our neighbour more than our ourselves.

St Thomas interprets ' You should love your neighbour as yourself ' from Leviticus 19 and Matthew 22 as meaning that love for ourselves is the exemplar of love for others.

He was the first European known to sight and enter the Congo River and to explore the West African coast between Cape St. Catherine and Cape Cross, almost from the equator to Walvis Bay in Namibia.

A smaller emphasis on doctrinal activity favoured the development here and there of the ascetic and contemplative life and there sprang up, especially in Germany and Italy, the mystical movement with which the names of Meister Eckhart, Heinrich Suso, Johannes Tauler, and St. Catherine of Siena are associated.

The two greatest saints of among them are St. Catherine of Siena and St. Rose of Lima, who lived ascetic lives in their family homes, yet both had widespead influence in their societies.

The expectation of obtaining these sinecures drew young men towards the church in considerable numbers, and the class of abbés so formed — abbés de cour they were sometimes called, and sometimes ( ironically ) abbés de sainte espérance, ( abbés of holy hope ; or the pun, of St. Hope )— came to hold a recognized position.

In American history important spokesmen included Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, J. Hector St. John de Crèvecœur ( 1735 – 1813 ), and John Taylor of Caroline ( 1753 – 1824 ) in the early national period.

The city is also famous for the Convento de Jesus ( now known as the City Museum " Santa Joana "), built in the 15th century, which contains the tomb of the daughter of Afonso V, St. Joana, who died in 1490.

Cartier was followed by nobleman Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts who was accompanied by explorer / cartographer Samuel de Champlain in a 1604 expedition where they established the second permanent European settlement in North America, following Spain's settlement at St. Augustine.

On 17 March 1649 a French expedition of 203 men from Martinique, led by Jacques Dyel du Parquet who had been the Governor of Martinique on behalf of the Compagnie des Iles de l ' Amerique ( Company of the Isles of America ) since 1637, landed at St. Georges Harbour and constructed a fortified settlement, which they named Fort Annunciation.

On 27th Sep 1650 du Parquet bought Grenada, Martinique, and St. Lucia from the Compagnie des Iles de l ' Amerique ( Company of the Isles of America ), as it was dissolved, for the equivalent of £ 1160.

Soon, grimoires appeared that involved Catholic saints within them ; one such example that appeared during the 19th century which became relatively popular, particularly in Spain, was the Libro de San Cipriano, or The Book of St Ciprian, which falsely claimed to date from circa 1000.

After successful settlement on the island of St. Christophe ( St. Kitts ), the French Company of the American Islands delegated ( Charles Lienard ) Liénard de L ' Olive and Jean Duplessis Ossonville, Lord of Ossonville to colonize one or any of the region ’ s islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique or Dominica.
